Vit D and bf mums

Kellymom posted this today:

I'm not sure what to do with this info. I plan to discuss it with my midwife (due Aug). I would imagine this level of vitamin would need to be prescribed.

I don't know the conversion of IU of vitamin D to mg.

Here are the current NHS guidelines

stargirl1701 · 18/06/2014 20:21

I ignore those guidelines when I'm not pg or bf. I take 4000IU between Oct-Apr as I know it is impossible to get Vit D in the winter at my latitude in Scotland. The question is whether to ignore them when bf?

www.nafwa.org/vitamind.php

Seems to suggest 5000 IU is equivalent to 125 ug.

I think there's also a big study being done in Scandinavia about this, and the fact that we need much more vitamin D than previously thought.

Or we could all sunbathe in the nude for 15min at midday Grin

In my area (Lewisham) they have a programme called the 'free d card' which I can take to the chemist and be given vitamin d tablets for me, and drops for the baby. They may have similar in your area?

stargirl1701 · 20/06/2014 07:43

They do and I take them. At the NHS dose of 400IU a day. This study is advising 5000IU a day. A significant difference.

1000 iu are sold as 'high dose' vit d3 in boots and health food stores.
I take one a day in winter (but are not pregnant or breat feeding)

stargirl1701 · 20/06/2014 10:09

It's pg/bf that makes me hesitate.
