Three week old shaking head when put to breast

My three week old has started really fussing when offered boob. He shakes his head from side to side and mucks about with the nipple, I have to practically strong arm him into feeding. Is there something wrong? What can I do to help him?

Is it every feed? My 7 week old does this when she's overtired or cluster feeding. Like now :)

Could it be a forceful let-down? Have a quick read of this kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

Could also be a slow letdown?

Mine had this around 6 weeks and just grew out of it...I never did figure out what the problem was!

Try feeding in a dark room, or lying down if possible... Or the opposite if you're already doing that

My 3 week old also does this, especially in the evening. HV told me it was an important part of bf in relation to the hind milk Hmm

I change from cradle hold to the other one (!) and she stops. Think it's just what some babies do!

I had this at one point, within the first month and my midwife also said it was normal. She explained that in each breast there are 5 separate sections which contain the ducts (this was her simplifying it for me) and that when DH starts squirming and moving his head around on the nipple it means he has emptied one section and is changing position to empty another. She kind of implied that babies have to do this when they are little because their mouths aren't big enough to ensure their sucking can equally empty all sections at the same time. She said as baby gets bigger and his mouth can open wider and take in more of the breast then the squirming and head movements should stop.

This is what I was told anyway, I'm not saying it is accurate Smile

DS is 11 weeks now and I honestly can't remember the last time he did it.

My 4wo does this at least once most days. Google says can be Hugh or low flow, so glad to hear other babies just grew out if it!
