Naproxen versus diclofenic

Hi a few weeks ago in sheer desperation during a gallbladder attack I took some of DH's naproxen, which helped enormously! Spoke to GP who prescribed diclofenic as it's safer, have taken two lots and am still in a lot of pain.

As an occasional use after DD four months is asleep would it be ok to take it? WWYD?

Kellymom has a list of drugs and their status for bfing. IIRC naproxen is not considered as safe as other NSAIDs like ibuprofen because it isn't established as safe in the absence of clinical trials.

Lactmed seems to think it's ok, with caveats about very small babies:

"Limited information indicates that levels of naproxen in breastmilk are low and adverse effects in breastfed infants are apparently uncommon. However, because of naproxen's long half-life and reported serious adverse reaction in a breastfed neonate, other agents may be preferred while nursing a newborn or preterm infant."

I ended up taking it and it eased the pain in half an hour whereas the diclofenic didn't help at all! Now I just have to decide whether to confess to the GP! There was a five hour gap before I had to feed DD so hopefully not a problem but thanks for the advice.

If you're worried at all about it, contact the BFN drugsline for the most up to date advice (they'll take things like age of baby, distance between feeds, etc. into account), but to be honest from the Lactmed info it doesn't sound like something to "confess" to the GP. Though might be an idea if you'll need it in future to get the BFN info, come to think of it, then you can bring it to your doc and get your own prescription?
