I can't quite believe what's just happened!
My baby is 8 weeks old and due to spending a week in Neonatal we had to learn to feed using a nipple shield.
Since coming home I have tried a few times to feed without and followed advice from the Breastfeeding Support Clinic but he's always tried feeding without for about 10 seconds and pulled away frustrated, he's never properly latched on.
I haven't tried him without the shield for around 10-14 days and that was a half arsed attempt in the bath!
Anyway, he's just woken up (we co-sleep), kicked/wriggled up the bed to me and latched on without the shield and started feeding!
I can't quite believe it just happened!
I intend to feed him for quite some time so am so excited at the thought of not having to carry around a nipple shield!
I can't believe he's so clever! It may be a coincidence but we've had a rare day at home today, very calm, he's slept for hours in my arms, we had a bath together followed by skin to skin feed (which I'm ashamed to say I almost never do) and a nap, maybe that's what did it?!
Sorry for rambling but I'm just so pleased, it feels totally different feeding so naturally, I can see why people love it!
Also wanted to give hope to anyone struggling to wean from a nipple shield like I was, maybe sometimes the baby just needs time.
