Sticky mucousy nappies…

What causes stringy sticky shiny nappies in newborns? My DS is 16wo (11wks corrected) & has had 5oz Formula this past wk- so he's been almost exclusively BF. He has had intermittent constipation & loose frequent explosive nappies since birth. For the last 6 days his dirty nappies have been way more frequent; from one every 2 days or so to 12/day. These have been explosive & snotty in appearance, which I've never noticed before. Not at all seedy like my 3 other BF DC's nappies. There may be one nappy a day with seedy bits, but that's it. He's been gaining weight well & isn't ill-no cold to explain the mucous. Any ideas?

If it corresponds with introducing the formula I'd be very suspicious he is cows milk protein intolerant. This affects 2-3% of infants, 0.5% are sensitive enough to react to CMP via breastmilk but it will become apparent in less sensitive individuals as soon as dairy is given directly.
The mucus just means the gut is inflamed and unhappy, not specific to CMPI.

It's worth chatting to your GP about it, although our LO has only really ever done sticky mucousy poos which are dark green, and we have been told that it's normal...however his weight gain is poor, and he has been seen by numerous doctors and paeds but they don't think it has anything to do with his weight issues. I have my doubts, but you should see your GP for some reassurance x
