Salty breastmilk?

usualnamechanger · 07/06/2014 22:22

I am breastfeeding a 20 month old and he is only drinking milk once or twice a day now and just one side. He has a 'favourite' breast and the other one's milk is more salty, but still, they both produce salty milk.

I am wondering if this is normal? Is he naturally weaning? I think he might be too young for that as I breastfed (I can actually remember) until I was 2 years and half.

No mastitis (I have had this in the past).

Please help.

I think I've read that your milk does go salty as the child weans.

Mine got darker in colour and DS was less keen to feed. He was 2 and gradually went to feeding once a day and then every few days.

There might be an article about it on kellymom.com. :-)

Genuine question - how do you know it's salty?

usualnamechanger · 07/06/2014 22:39

I am not pregnant (got my period now).

No article about it in kellymom other than one saying some toddlers self wean naturally not early than 18-24 months (sorry if this makes no sense).

And I know it's salty because I have tasted it, expressed a little bit with my own hands and tasted it.

I am worried I am going to get mastitis because toddler refuses to breastfeed one boob Sad

And also because I thought I would be breastfeeding for longer like my mum did.

I maybe just read it on here.

When DS finally stopped my boobs felt a bit heavy and even achy for a while, but I didn't have problems with blockage.

I wasn't expecting him to stop so I felt funny about it too. :(

jaggy You are probably right, but it makes me so sad, I thought I would be breastfeeding for longer too Sad
