Should I give breastmilk or water to a vomiting 11-month old?

My bab yhas been vomting for nearly 24 hours - three major vomiting sessions have happened after her last three big feeds. She has brought up loads and loads projectile-stylee with her whole body convulsing. She seems to keep water down better, but I thought that breastmilk should be the first thing offered to a vomiting baby? Can anyone advise?

Hi MP how are you feeling today?

purplemonkeydishwasher · 04/09/2006 18:37

I'm so glad that I foudn this thread! My DS (11mo) has been vomiting for 3 days now (actually it has only been at night until today) and I was starting to doubt myself because he was always sick after i fed him.
morningpaper - has your dd been normal otherwise? my ds has been fine - his mood etc- except for this vomiting thing. He's covered me in vomit at least 6 times in the last couple of days

Think a bug must be going round! MP are you in bed poorly sick?

The best "cure" for a sick child is breastmilk. Whenever DS has a cold or fever (he hasn't had this vomitting bug thank goodness) the only thing he will take is breastmilk, he won't touch his food.

Last week DS (2.2 years) got this horrid chest infection/fever that I got first (may be brought by in-laws who have just come from abroad) - it was much milder than what I had, he had a fever and sore throat, I b-fed him twice during the night when he woke up due to high temp, he wouldn't let go of my breasts !! The next morning after a good long sleep he was fine, no sign of an illness at all

Morningpaper and purplemonkey, how is everything now? My 11 month old had a bug/reaction to antibiotics that started on Saturday morning and he is still really lethargic today. it is really upsetting, I really thought we would be turning the corner today. I caught the bug on Sunday night but am fine now (well fine for sorting out pukey washing), but he is taking ages to recover...

Mine is similar grover - I'm fine now but baby is still grumpy and not wanting to eat solids. i guess it will take a while to recover

I suppose at least if they are sleeping loads it gives us plenty of time to sort out that washing!!!

another bad night. no vomiting since about 8 this morning. But he isn't himself yet. and still won't eat anything other than boobie!

i called my HV yesteday. what pearls of wisdom did she offer? 'oh i don't know'. so i called nhs24. they said it was probably cattarh. right. went to the docotr today who said it was a bug.
argggg.
he's still in a good mood though mostly. except every once in a while he gets cranky and cried for a bit. we were up all night last night with vomiting and teeth. sooooo tirreeedddd

God it is so hard isn't it? Today I've spoken to NHS Direct & HV after I got so worried about ds sleeping for 6 hours this morning (with a 5 minute feed in the middle). As soon as I got off the phone, splat, a whole new load of vom over everything! So rang doctors who told me to bring him in, dragged him out of bed, waited in a boiling waiting room with wailing child for half an hour (good tip, if you want your doctor to call you in quick, get your boob out for a breastfeed and get a hungry child just latched on - guaranteed!) only to be told... it's a bug! He said it could last until Thursday!!!!!!

I have now washed everything we own I think. And there is still more to be done again...
