Infant gaviscon? Does it work??

Can anyone help? I have a 7 week old baby who I am convinced has reflux (he has all the symptoms and the HV said he probably was). Does infant gaviscon work? does it have to be prescribed by the doctor and if so, will they only do it if the baby is not putting on weight??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as me and DH seem to spend most of our time trying to catch vomit in a bowl!! Also any other advice about how to try and ease the situation would be greatly appreciated also

Liquidclocks - thanks v much for the advice - it has been extremely helpful - I managed to use the links eventually.

We are meticulously recording his feed times, amounts and if and when he is sick - there seems to be a pattern emerging of vomiting every 3 feeds - I wonder if this is because his stomach is too full from the previous 2 and once he has vomited, it is cleared and the pattern starts again - have no idea if this can happen but at least we can be prepared.

mrsnoah he was referred to a paed as they were concerned in the early days about pyloric stenosis which thankfully it was not.
We have a great GP actually who was a top paes in another country before he came to uk and went into general practice so is more than happy to see us again to get this sorted.
Had horrendous day with DS today went to see my gran who has just moved into the area and he just screamed blue murder and threw up every feed.
Have tried the dairy and wheat and other dietry things too was very careful about those things because DD was sensetive but nothing actually makes him any better or any worse than he already is thankfully.

Hi Superblue. My 2 year old suffered from reflux as a baby, Gaviscon didn't always help but keeping him raised for an hour after feeds helped alot. Just some more tips that might help you: Very gently massaging your baby's tummy in circular motions can help ease the pain (not straight after feeding). Keeping my son on his stomach made him much more comfortable, this is great relief though you need to make sure you're with the babe. I know it is MUCH easier said than done but try not to worry too much, I remember how stressfull it is but it will definately stop as your baby's digestive system matures. It's only a suggestion but have you tried other formula milk? My son could never digest Cow & Gate or SMA but with Hipp Organic he had no problems. Hope this helps x

Hi all

I only manage to pop on here every now and again but wanted to ask a question about Infant Gaviscon. I tried to BF but due to my health after her birth and no milk coming in, I swapped her to SMA Gold.

My doc prescribed it as DD sicks up feed and very frequently has hiccups. DS got colic just after she reached 2 months old and HV recommended changing her formula to an Easy Digest so changed to the Aptamil Easy Digest. Following the doc's advice, I mixed the Infant Gaviscon with the new formula which has a thicker consistency and she seemed to be in more pain so I stopped it.

Colic now seems to be getting better I think (takes a better feed in the evening) but her reflux is coming back and she does seem to have problems doing her No2s. I am wary to try the Gaviscon again if it can cause constpation.

Anyone advise?
xx

Infant gaviscon is AMAZING. Just go to the gp, don't say "I think he has reflux" but just describe all the symptoms. Mine is 10 months old and still taking it for her milk feeds. We got sleep for the very first time with infant gaviscon. Lumpy stuff an hour later - yes, I remember that, sounds just like gaviscon!

My little girl (5 weeks) has just been prescribed gaviscon for her reflux, but I'm having a nightmare getting her to take it. She has been purely breastfeed so far and refuses it in a bottle. The feeding syringe made her yell and cough. So far using a teaspoon to spoon small amounts in has been best so far, but she spits most of it out. So far I'm managing to get about 1/6th the dose into her tummy. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get the medicine down?

TittyBojangles · 22/02/2011 10:07

I used a syringe, only mixed 3 ml of water and squirted towards the cheek not the back of the throat. Possibly try a smaller syringe as your DD is so little. Speak to the pharmacist about it, they may have some ideas?

Sorry, in a rush. Good luck :)

@ Traford - try giving it to her with a feeding syringe (back of her month, near her cheek) and then stuff a dummy in. Works for us.

Ds was prescribed inf gav but after he was 10lb and went to double doses the constipation caused was far far worse than the silent reflux
I didn't want him to be on it when he had jabs and interestingly he is no worse off for not having it- and not constipated so poss more comfy!!
I have tried 2 sessions cranial osteopathy for him, last one this week, was mire chilled after first tho some people swear by if

mrsgordonfreeman · 14/06/2011 10:00

I tried it but dosing a bf baby who won't take a bottle was almost impossible. I think it's a placebo for the parents tbh, dd's colic cleared up on its own without any folk remedies.

If feeding a EBM bottle (or FF for that matter) should the teat size be increased to account for the thicker liquid?

madurangi1982 · 25/01/2016 16:24

My baby was born in 30 weeks n now he s 42 weeks. Suffering from reflux n colic. Doc said to give infant gaviscon. I got the liquid bottle from Paris. All the instructions r in french. Can anyone tell me how to use it

lavei · 01/02/2017 11:29

I know this is an old thread but I've got this for my LB and he won't take it! I've mixed it with breast milk and everything but having a bottle really unsettles him and he is just crying now and really upset. He vommed up his whole feed more or less so I'm assuming it hasn't worked.
Anyone got any advice?
