Most Nutritious Formula Milk?

I have grudgingly had to switch to formula feeding at 6 weeks and am anxious to know if all the formulas are the same or if there is one that stands out as having less nasties in it?

Thanks for the advice!

thanks i aksed the doctor today if its normal to feed that much and he was very reluctant to make any comment. What is everyones views on leaving them to cry at points during the day? and for how long?

Have you give up the bf completely now ? if not, I would just take some time out to sat at home, watch the tv & feed & cuddle him. My Dd is 6 weeks old & feeds every 1.5 - 2.5 hours. I grab her & sit at the computer & just veg. I don't really want to go out 'cos I'm still in my maternity jeans & I'm sick of wearing them !

Was your birth long/traumatic ? might be worth seeing a cranial ostepath, otherwise, just feed & cuddle & get family/friends to come & visit you.

BTW babies cry because there is something wrong, it is hard though, when you want to have a shower etc, some days I haven't got dress until the afternoon. Fortunately DD2 is sleeping nicely & I'm supposed to be having a clearout ! Hope she isn't awake all night....

i have given up breastfeeding, very reluctently, but it was the only way i could keep sane to be perfectly honest! we are much happier for it. I am having a fun day today thought the midwife has said he is having a growth spurt hence the feeding every 1-2 hours at the mo, should settle soon. she also said to not leaving him crying, which is good, feel i am not such a shit mum now! i agree why do they always cry when you want to do something?

Hi bugpurple - I FF DS and the feeding pattern you described a few days ago sounded fine. Just make sure you wake him for a feed every 3 hrs or so during the day so he gets used to having most food during the day and then he'll probably naturally tend towards having a longer sleep at night and you won't need to do the leaving to cry thing (though personally during the evening/night when DS was 2/3 wksI started leaving it for 4/5 mins - no more at this age - before going to him just in case it was a blip and sometimes he settled himself without a feed). DS was 8lb 11oz at birth and consistently drank slightly more than it said on the tin though he did have reflux so sicked some up - I still think he was actually digesting the top end of the estimates n the tin.

Lex - I posted a thread recently on whether anyone knew whether organic formula was any better and no-one knew. I used Farleys, then enfamil with DS and had no problems. I've heard sma can cause constipation and cow and gate green poo but tbh that might have happened whichever milk the baby had.

btw bugpurple - leaving a one week old to cry imo isn't right as they're too litle and new. There's a good checklis here for crying but as they get older some babies do just cry, the challenge becomesknowing when they're crying because they need something and when they're crying because they need sleep and to be left alone - you work it all out though as you get to know eachother!

bugpurple · 04/09/2006 19:02

thanks for that, had a weird night last night he slept for 4-5 hours which is odd and right now he is wih his dad and very restless, he has just had a massive feed and done all the checks! feel i am going mad!!

hey there. just wanted to get everyones thoughts in preparing bottle feeds in advance - especially for night time feeds, the midwife mentioned the other day that there had been a new bacteria found when feeds are prepared in advance and put in the fridge to cool and then reheat when needed. She suggested preparing the water in advance and then adding the feed to the water when needed and then reheat...my baby is still feeding very regularly so not sure how this would work out any thoughts? has anyone heard this as well?

Hi All

thanks to all again for your help. I've started him on Hipp Organic and seems to be going ok. Now I realise that he had the runs on Aptamil so I'm glad I changed. Has anyone else found that the powder is harder to mix in with the water with Hipp?

Bugpurple - I have also heard that it's best to prepare the water and add the formula when needed. It's not much hassle once you get used to it, promise

i am trying the adding powder to water today method and it does seem ok, i am sure my baby is constipated today, he is making grunting noises, he isnt the quietiest of babies anyway! i have tried some water as i heard that was good for wind.
