Breast feeding problems - pump recommendations

Hi, I am after some advice/recommendations about a breast pump.

My baby is 7 days old and is on formula due to trouble latching on. I wanted to breast feed fr
Bottles anyway, however I am trying to express but I am not expressing enough. I am considering buying a new double breast pump (currently using tommee tippee electric pump?) can anyone recommended a decent double pump? Also is there any that will take tommee tippee bottles?

Ardo Calypso is an excellent pump and has an optional double adapter, can highly recommend. Though if you're going to be expressing a lot of/most feeds for now it might be an idea to try and rent one of the big hospital grade ones - they have more powerful motors than the home use ones and are very efficient.

I wouldn't worry too much about the bottles, you can just pump into whatever fits the pump and then decant it into your bottles of choice.

I had a thread on here last month about this and everyone on here told me tommy tippee was a no go so I avoided and have no experience of it, I went on their recommendations and got a medela swing best thing ever but they also said the avent one was good but I cant for the life of me remember what it was called. hope that helps a bit

I use medela swing, it's very good. But in your situation I'd contact the MW to ask about borrowing the hospital grade pump asap. Congratulations btw.

You can hire from the NCT I don't know what pumps they have but worth looking into, especially if pumping form this early as you are going to need to establish your supply.

Having a look on kellymom.com website on the section for exclusive pumping will give you lots of tips on what you need to be doing to get a good supply going.

The NCT hire them. Just call the bf helpline. Your local hospital might hire them too. Try asking the Infant Feeding Specialist.

I hired a Medela Symphony from the NCT for £40 per month in order to relactate. After 3 months I gave it back and used a Medela Freestyle. I would recommend both.

Lots of babies have problems latching on. I experienced it worse with ds2 than ds1. I know you must be having an awful time so and sympathy.

Have you had dc checked for tongue tie and spoken to a feeding counsellor? Just to point out its early days and the best thing to do alongside pumping is keep trying to feed baby yourself. It's shockingly hard work and miserable but you can do it!

Medela swing a good single pump. I second hiring a medela symphony (double pump version). If you're going to pump you might as well do both boobs at once.

I found the Ameda Lactaline very good. Are you getting any RL help?

I would also reccomend the Ardo Calypso. They cost £125. Or you can hire for £10 pw. I used the NCT site for signposting to a local shop which hires them out.

Just to update, I ended up renting a calypso/ardo double pump. I have It for 7 days and if it's any good I will buy one. I was disappointed at first as I was expecting the medulla one however I have used it twice so far and made more milk then I did over 30 hours with the tommee tippee pump. I made 45 mls with the tommee tippee pump and have already exceeded this. So it's looking positive.

I have also got some fenugreek tablets and fennel tea. However the fennel tea smells horrible so can't promise I'll be drinking it!

Oh I'm glad you are having a positive experience with pumping, I know some women really struggle.

I have just got a hand held manual one (Lasinoh brand) and I love it. I started using it on and off from when DS was about 10 days old. He's now 8 weeks and I can get about 5oz in ten minutes.

I am managing around an ounce everytime I pump which is usually About 15-20 minutes. How long did it take you to increase your supply? Baby is having 1 or 2 breast milk bottles a day and I really want him to be on more breast less formula. X

It's almost as if after 5 mins of pumping my boobs are empty but then they still leak not long after.

I found lots of things helped with pumping.

Looking at a photo of DD.
Smelling an item of her clothes.
Listening to a hypnotherapy track specifically for bf.
Pumping overnight.

Rewarding myself with chocolate raisins I laid out 12 every morning at 8am and each time I pumped I ate one. I was relactating so it was important the pump frequently. I never pumped for more than 10 minutes though.
