What are the chances that a 5month bf baby "forget" how to bf if bottlefed exclusively for 7 days?

Not done for 7 days but my dd had expressed breast milk from a bottle for 4 days when 4 months old and had no problem remembering what to do when I got back.
Can you express at all so your baby still gets the same tasting milk? Have you tried a bottle yet to see if he/she will take it? If not you acould also try a cup at this age

my friend took antibiotics and then her baby had a bad disbacteriosis. i had been prescribed antibiotics, been iold it is ok to bf.
however now i have second thoughts. was wondering if it is better to give formula for 7 days (will express and discard mine)??? my mum heard that baby can get used to easy flow of milk in the bottle and refuse to bf afterwards?? it might be the case for newborn but she is 5month??? thanks

i think if she were a newborn there ma have been a problem but at 5 months i would imagine she will be fine.

I took flux due to a bacterial lung infection when my ds was about 6 mths old.
I had taken augmentin first which did not work
Flux gave him some curious nappies but otherwise no effects at all.
He was probably one of the healthiest babies on the block

Says it's safe to take here

I'd bfeed and take these. Stop if you want to for other reasons, but there's no drug-related reason to.

hunkermunker · 30/08/2006 18:11

It's safe for the baby to have direct, so no problem at all for you to bfeed.

LIZS · 30/08/2006 18:12

What did the doctor say ? They have a big book of drugs, potential side effects and contarary indications as do pharmacists. If that was checked out and you were still advised it was ok then you should be fine. Sounds as if your friend was very unfortunate but it may not have been the same AB, dosage and other factors which caused it.

I took fluclox when DS was 2 weeks old for an episiotomy wound infection and was fine. I've checked the BNF for you too (big drugs book mentioned, which has a section on what you can and can't take when breast-feeding) and it says 'trace amounts in breast milk only', so no problem. It did give my little boy a bit of colic and might give the baby a bit of diarrhoea but otherwise shouldn't be a problem at all. As somebody else said you can give it to babies for skin infections etc anyway.

i breastfeed through 3 courses (7 days each) of antibiotics when dd was 6 weeks onwards for uterine infection, so its worth bearing in mind that the antibiotics may not work and you may need another course and then your in tricky situation breastfeeding wise, hope that doesn't happen to you but after my experience thought it might bew worth considering.

Many thanks for your replies. Will carry on bf.

The most commonly prescribed antibiotic is penicillin. I took these for a week for a chest infection while bf my then 18 month old son.

Kellymom.com has a huge list of things safe to take. I couldn't find the one you mention, it must be called something different in the USA. If concerened, I would switch to penicillin or one of the others on the AAP list - penicillin comes under the L1 category ("safest").

There is absolutely no reason to put a baby on formula when you are taking medication, most medication is safe. Unless you intend to give up bf altogether.

Yes, there is a danger that a baby that age, after 7 days of exclusive formula will no longer take the breast.

As an aside, a visiting mw told me that I couldn't take suppositories for constipation (had a bad case of it about 4 days after my son's birth) because I was bf....silly moooooooos mw's !

donna3 · 31/08/2006 12:19

Flucloxacillin is a form of penicillin yellowrose, so is safe to take.
