Underwired bras

Can I wear them? I'm still bfing dd 15m 2-4 times a day.

Tricky one for me. I wore them from about 5 months with dd (bf until 12 months). Started wearing them at about 4 months with ds but got a couple of bouts of mastitis, which I think was unrelated but, just to be sure, went back to nursing bras as didn't want any more agonising pain.

ds now nearly 7 months, about 4 or 5 bf per day, started wearing underwired bras again last week.

For me, it's a choice of permanent discomfort in nursing bra(32E or F at the moment) versus risk of mastitis again, which, as I said, I believe was unrelated to underwiring.

I may be talking a load of rubbish here, just my thoughts!

not sure what the answer is but i'm countingthe days until i finish bfing and then i will have moderately well supported boobs again and not this saggy matronly look i seem to possess at the moment!!!

prettycandles · 23/03/2004 20:26

I'm also getting fed up with that 'saggy matronly look'! I'm 2-3 sizes overweight and want to take advantage of my wazzoomers to try and achieve some vestige of a feminine silhouette - even if that involves the dreaded underwire.

I've worn them since ds was about 5 months as by then my boobs had got too small for my nursing bras and were looking decidedly miserable. There was no way I was going to buy any more of the ugly things if I could help it and I've not had any problems in over a year of feeding. I'm hardly cleavage queen though and tend to go for the plain seam free sort rather than the wonderbra type but have no idea if this is relevant - they just seem 'comfier' iyswim. Sorry too much information, will stop now

bea · 24/03/2004 10:38

not wanting to be too crude... but how do you pop out your boob to feed with an underwire...?

Skara · 24/03/2004 10:58

Bea, if you have moderately sized boobs iut's quite easy to pop one out of an underwire! You just drop the strap off your shoulder a bit and lever said boob out of top of bra (do you see what I mean?). I suffered more than a year of sagging boobs in nursing bras first time round, about 3 months second time round, and intend to be in underwired bras from the off this time as there is a company in the states who sell underwired feeding bras I've fed all mine till they were well over a year old and not had any trouble with mastitis - I think as long as you're careful, make sure the bra fits well and keep an eye out for any problems it's fine.

Too SMALL for nursing bras, croak? You lucky girl...

I'm now on froglet 3, and I'm still busting (pun intended...) out of my bravado nursing bra most of the time (very saggy and matronly, and sometimes you get that nice 'double breasted' effect too, mm, foxy).

When I feel the need to escape from that look, some nice lacy underwires meet the case exactly. You can pop a boob out over the top to feed, or underneath, depending on what you're wearing. Neither is very comfortable, but it can be done. Alternatively, you can undo the back of the bra, which is more comfortable, but can cause problems putting yourself back together again.

Is that enough information?

Love you all! Bravissimo here I come!

Yes, bravissimo are very fine, aren't they?

prettycandles · 24/03/2004 14:53

What I'd really like is an expenses-paid trip to Rigby and Pellar...

Only too small for the ones I bought when I was nearly 40 weeks pg with a huge, high, completely unengaged bump. Also the woman in m&s told me to buy a size too big, which was fine for the the first couple of weeks but then I just got lost in them. Sadly I was too stingy rather than too skinny to get any more Re. popping them out (ahem), I just leave the straps fairly loose and find it comfortable and easier in public than fiddling with those catchy things

AussieSim · 29/03/2004 18:23

A friend of mine who is a nurse and pregnant, said that there are in fact no good studies showing that underwire is actually an issue for lactating women (one assumes they are properly fitted). I have started wearing underwire again in the last couple of weeks DS 14mths, bfing 3 times per day. I just whip it off altogether and put it back on when I am finished - usually bfing at home alone - so no prob.

Demented · 29/03/2004 23:10

I changed over to ordinary bras when DS2 was about 15 months. He was only feeding once or twice a day and I just used to take it off to feed (usually fed at home), then he stopped altogether and I was quite glad I hadn't wasted money on more feeding bras, at least I had something I could wear for a while.

prettycandles · 30/03/2004 13:43

Well I took the plunge (groan) and wore my pretty 'little' black one with the tartan trim - and underwires - for a day. Made quite a change from white cotton! Feeding was not a problem, I just popped them out, as Skara puts it. Was even more daring: I've got a cupboard full of lovely silk shirts from when I was a waged woman, all of course unworn since I started reproducing - and I wore one! Wow what luxury: underwired bra AND silk blouse, in the middle of the day! Of course dd took her revenge, by lunchtime it was covered with dribble, followed by a generous smearing of lunch itself.

Mind you, much as I was looking forward to getting out of the feeding bras, I'm so used to their softness now that by the end of the day the underwires were killing me . I'll just have to get lots more practice wearing them .
