I am taking it. Started at 10mg 3 times a day.

For a while I was taking 20mg 4x a day.

I got it on prescription.

Might be worth looking at the Jack Newman website.

Sorry, falling asleep but will come back. Good Luck :)

MrsWooster · 15/05/2014 00:18

Definitely works, started in two x three times per day iirc, side effects of HUGE poos! Hth!

bigbadwritersblock · 15/05/2014 04:14

Thabks very much - great side affects !

Feel its working but not every feed? Wonder if I should try 3x2.

Horrible doctor won't prescribe them- costing a fortune

OP posts:

I've been taking it for about a week, started with over the counter but now on prescription (doc will only prescribe 5 days at a time due to new rules about it)
LC believes I may have been left with low supply due to tongue tie and anxiety about lack of weight gain and feeding. Am taking the domperidone as a last resort to try and solve my issues. Does seem to be going better since I started it.

You can buy it online but depends how you feel about the ethics of all of that etc

Isabeller · 16/05/2014 12:37

How annoying that doctor won't prescribe. I have no idea if a friendly pharmacist could do you a discount for a bulk purchase if you explained the situation. I had to have a private prescription for hormones during fertility treatment and I'm sure our sympathetic pharmacist charged cost price.

I'm also taking Fenugreek which seems to help.

Isabeller · 16/05/2014 12:38

Have you seen an NHS lactation consultant? Just wondering if they'd be willing to write to the GP and request Domperidone.

Fetacat · 16/05/2014 19:03

I took 3x2 a day and then gradually phased it out dropping 1 pill a day and finally 1 every other day and had no problems and am still BF with no supply issues... I also took fenugreek. I was lucky and managed to get it on prescription. Id second trying to get someone to write a Letter to your GP explaining why you need it. I know that has worked for others in the last. Good luck!

bigbadwritersblock · 16/05/2014 22:44

Thanks for the info, the D and hospital grade pumping as often as I can seem to be really improving my supply. I've seen a private LC and she's written a letter for me to try a sympathetic dr with. (Hope it died s DH has to chemist runs when we know the certain pharmacists aren't working as they won't give more then one box!!)

So once supply is increased you can stop taking them and supply will still be there? Not sure how it all works but fingers crossed it does - this is my second and last attempt to ebf and i desperately want it to work -have had a breast reduction which affects supply .....

Your "horrible" doctor might not be prescribing domperidone because the MHRA (who regulates drugs in the UK) has recently advised that domperidone use should be restricted to those with nausea and vomiting and then no longer for a week due to the significant risk of fatal heart arrhythmias.

www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/10788459/Heartburn-drug-Motilium-should-be-restricted-due-to-heart-deaths-says-medicines-regulator.html

I found fenugreek (capsules from Holland & Barrett) very helpful when DS had a tongue tie and really helped keep my supply up.

lloydlf76 · 17/05/2014 10:01

The above study is old news nwews not recent research. It was conducted on elderly patients who were already very unweill with significant underlying medical issues. It also involved the patients receiving huge doses of domperidone via IV rather than small doses orally. The relevance of the findings to BF mothersis questionable at the very best. Jack Newman has written a very good response.

Kif · 17/05/2014 10:02

dino - a bit scaremongering there!

The link said that there was up to a 3.5 times greater chance of heart arrhythmia compares to general population (I.e. tiny if you have no predisposing factors.). The sample size was 23,000,000 prescriptions to French citizens for nausea. And they do still plan to prescribe it for nausea - just in slightly more cautious doses.

It is always worth questioning your motivation for taking medication - but being able to continue bf with the help of Domperidone really helped my son's health - and meant we avoided other medical interventions.

DinoSnores · 17/05/2014 10:16

Not scaremongering, sharing the facts and the reason why a doctor, who is responsible for their own prescriptions, might not want to prescribe domperidone for anything other than nausea and vomiting and then only in short courses. The new thing is that the MHRA and EMA has changed the advice on domperidone based on a number of studies as listed here:

www.ema.europa.eu/ema/index.jsp?curl=pages/news_and_events/news/2014/04/news_detail_002083.jsp&mid=WC0b01ac058004d5c1

Kif · 17/05/2014 10:50

Those documents say that it can still be prescribed for nausea up to 10mg three times a day - but should no longer be prescribed for heartburn or bloating. Presumably taking a licensed medicine for something you can address with peppermint tea and a Rennies is an unjustified risk. However - I would argue that it's use for bf (after other interventions have been exhausted) - is justified and balanced by the many positive health outcomes for continuing bf - particularly in special cases such as premature babies or allergies.

DinoSnores · 17/05/2014 10:58

It can still be prescribed for nausea and vomiting but that the usual course should be no longer than a week. A doctor would find it difficult, therefore, to justify their actions and prescription now if something bad were to happen if they went off the rules (which doctors do regularly but it has to be balance of risks & benefits) and a young mother suffered as a result.

Kif · 17/05/2014 11:05

Like someone said upthread - the data mainly referred to patients aged 60+ who had other risk factors.

I discussed my Domperidone use with a paed - and he said he was totally relaxed about it - because he routinely wrote out long-term prescriptions for neonates with reflux. Quite possibly it will be withdrawn from that - but that is not the source of negative reports.

But I take your point that a GP wouldn't want to run that risk.

bigbadwritersblock · 18/05/2014 02:47

I didn't say the doctor was horrible for not prescribing the D, shes a horrible doctor for many many reasons!

Afraid fenugreek doesn't work for me (do you not think I'd have tried this first - proper issues such as feeding after a double breast reduction) need more help then fenugreek can give.

OP posts:
AngryBeaver · 18/05/2014 03:51

I was on domperidone for about a week. It seemed to work really well. But the side effects were not good. Really bad (stinking!) wind, all the time.
And baby seemed to be affected too, she screamed in pain from 1-5.
Stopped taking them & the wind went away. But supply dropped.

Tried fenugreek and the same bloody thing happened.
:(
I really wish I could still take it as baby has stopped gaining weight and I'm having to supplement. :(

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 18/05/2014 05:20

Agree that Fenugreek was useless for me too. As was fennel tea. Bloody waste of money.

bigbadwritersblock · 18/05/2014 22:26

Angry beaver - there's another medication you can take if not prone to depression, I think its called raglan/reglan

It might work well for you .... Worth a try ??

OP posts:
AngryBeaver · 19/05/2014 02:11

Thanks for that, I'll investigate. I'm not in the UK though, so maybe not available here.

AngryBeaver · 19/05/2014 05:16

Some pretty scary side effects with Reglan...think I'll give that a miss!
