Is it unwise to let a breast fed baby sleep too long?

Fed constantly until 11pm last night, amongst some crying.

Then slept until 6am, had a feed and still asleep now!

Health visitor said maybe not to let her go longer than four hours between feeds as she's tongue tied (getting snipped tomorrow) and only put on one ounce in last week.

However instinct tells me she's fine. Fed lots yesterday, wet and dirty nappies. Alert and fontanell not sunken.

Any advice

How old?

How old? IME if it's early days it's worth keeping feeds fairly frequent, for the sake of your supply as much as anything.

I had this experience. Manic feeding and then completely wiped out the next day, to the point where I was panicking about how long he was going without a feed. One time it took me 45 mins to get him awake!! Think it might have been a growth spurt.

If they are very little and weight is an issue then I think it's wise to wake them, hard though it is! Once the weight gain picks up you can let her sleep.

How old? I would lift DD to feed every three hours between 7am and 7pm, then four hourly 7pm-7am. Even if asleep, the touch of a milk filled teat would stir her enough to take a feed.

Shes only 2 weeks old but did feed constantly yesterday afternoon and evening until 11pm.

This is dc3 so I'm not a novice. However getting used toa new little person and her pattern makes me feel like one!

If she has feeding/weight issues then your HVs advice sounds sensible.

At 2 weeks old I was told not to let my baby go more than four hours without a feed. This is because babies dehydrate quickly and also to encourage milk supply. I would have thought that going 7 hours without breast feeding at such an early stage would be detrimental to the supply/demand factor of breast milk production.

An ounce a week isn't very much - my baby (almost 8 weeks) puts about 7oz a week on, last week he put on 10oz!!

The longest he goes overnight without a feed is about 5.5hours and I still worry that's too long.

She's been very settled today, definitely not dehydrated.Periods of being alert. Very wet nappies and dirty ones too.

Its hard because my instinct tells me she's fine. Will seewhat her weight gain is when health visitor comes Monday.

I'm a big believer of trusting a mother's instinct Smile

I hope she has a good weight gain and you can continue with your egome and cherish your nights filled with sleep not that I'm jealous Grin
