Above really. Going nuts.

I don't think there is but you can start one? How old is your baby? My DS is 13 months now and still meds for reflux. Are they on medication?

BelleBoyd · 13/05/2014 16:44

My DS is 9 weeks old and is on ranitidine and domperidone. Was on Gaviscon for a month but has terrible wind and constipation so have taken him off that. What meds is your DS on? I'm not sure they are working for mine. Still fussy feeding, screaming in pain for hours at a time, frothing at mouth, hiccups etc.
Are you breastfeeding or formula? I moved to formula at 3 weeks because of the constant feeding and a low milk supply.
My 4 year old had silent reflux and I breastfed her for 2 years-couldn't go through that again especially with another child to look after.
Thinking if asking for a lactose intolerance test.

Think my 6 week old dc2 has it. Been doing mixed feeding but going over to formula as I have a 2 yr old and no help from next week.

She is v v unsettled and pukes if put down too soon...is that reflux? She gets lots of hiccups, bubbles in her mouth too and screams while feeding and stiffens her body with legs straight out.

Hamnvik · 14/05/2014 15:45

My Ds is on Omeprazole, he has had Gaviscon and randitidine previously. Have you seen a paediatrician yet? How long has he been on ranitidine for? It takes a few weeks to work I think.
I think lactose intolerance is quite rare but it might be cows milk protein intolerance, my DS has this and has been on special formula since 16 weeks and is dairy/soya free.
How old was your little girl when she grew out of it?

Popalina that definitely sounds like reflux!

Popalina · 14/05/2014 21:39

Thanks Ham. We tried infacol this eve and she seems much more settled but that could be a coincidence and connected to her growth spurt.

BelleBoyd · 15/05/2014 06:27

My DD got a lot better when on solids and able to sit up- I think around 6/7 months old. But she was and still is a tricky eater and sleeper. Our appointment with the paediatrician isn't for another 2 months..
Haven't tried omeprazole yet. Wonder if that would be better? Our GP prescribed the raniditine so I wonder he if could prescribe it?
DS seems a bit better in the daytime now but is very screamy late afternoon till bedtime which is the worst time as I'm trying to get DDs tea/bath/bedtime done.

It's so hard when you have another to cater for. I can put mine down for all of 5 seconds at the moment and she doesn't like the sling so I am feeling a bit screwed!!

Popalina · 15/05/2014 15:45

Having a bad day today. Thank goodness DH is around or I would be tearing my hair out.

So glad I've found this thread! Can i ask some advice please? My DS is 4 weeks old, he has recently started being a bit sick after feeds, it's sort of cottage cheese like, he gets really distressed by it and then screams for ages. The only thing that calms him is to feed again, although it is only a couple of sucks. Because of this he is sort of snacking loads rather than having proper feeds. He also gulps a lot and then starts crying, has hiccups loads, goes rigid after and sometimes during feeds and is generally getting more fussy feeding which is hurting my nipples!!

My DD was diagnosed with a cow milk intolerance at about 5 months, and was prescribed nutramigen and thick and easy, which really helped. She was sick a lot though, loads and stopped putting on any weight. It got the the point that she was being sick and there was blood in it. I really would rather avoid that this time. Do you think it's worth going to the gps and asking for gavison or even the nutramigen, I'm currently breast feeding but would stop as I did with DD. Does it sounds like reflux symptoms to you? He just seems generally quiet unhappy! Do you think they will just tell me that because he is putting on weight to see how it goes?

Thanks in advance.

Popalina · 15/05/2014 18:53

Hi! Sorry to hear your story. My DD is 6 weeks and is EXACTLY the same. It's getting worse as well! I think it is reflux. Same problem with snacking and that combined with tongue tie has me mostly formula bottle feeding now. I just use the boob in the evening to settle her as she sleeps on it!

My DS had it and we also put him on nutrimigen and it helped massively at this stage. He doesn't have a cows milk intolerance though.

I am also wondering about doing the same for DD although it's early days. I might try the comfort milk from Aptamil first to see if the thicker formula doesn't come up so easily. I seem to think it also helped DS.

Popalina · 15/05/2014 18:55

I think the GP would give you something. I know that mine gave me Gaviscon at about 3 months for my DS. I was going to google early reflux meds this eve as I am not sure how soon they prescribe these things. Bit worried about the constipation side effects of gaviscon though.

BelleBoyd · 17/05/2014 06:11

My DS was on Gaviscon at 4 weeks old and then ranitidine and domperidone at 6 weeks old so they do prescribe these meds very early. These medications aren't licensed for under 12 month olds but in reality lots of babies have been given them for some time. I hate having to medicate my DS and I sometimes think perhaps I shouldn't and just deal with the reflux. But it's torturous to see him in so much pain.
My DS was putting on tons of weight as he was comfort eating to soothe his throat-doesn't eat so much now as he's slightly better. Some docs will say it's not a problem when they are putting on weight and indeed it isn't life or death but it's unreasonable to expect a parent to watch their baby suffer not to mention how damaging the constant screaming is to the family as a whole.
I've taken my DS off Gaviscon as it is really constipating and after 4 weeks on it he was straining so much he's herniated his belly button.
Having said that the Gaviscon does work well straight away keeping the milk down but I am now just relying on keeping him upright as much as possible and feeding little and often. He does bring up milk at every feed in the day ( not at night tho ).
I'm wondering whether to trial him off his other meds to see if he/we can cope without them..
I'm hoping that in a couple of months once he's on solids it will get better.

It is awful to watch them suffer. You can experiment with tapering off another med as you always have the option of introducing them.

Mine has a heavy cold at 7 weeks so I don't know if that has made the reflux worse. At the mo I am just going with the holding upright 24/7 approach which is exhausting and hard with toddler. Night feeds take me two hours sometimes.

Next step might be comfort milk.

I seem to remember not lasting more than a few days on gaviscon with DS before we went back to holding upright and then it seemed to really improve near the 5 month mark when he could sit up.

We just have to hang in there.

BelleBoyd · 17/05/2014 09:15

Yes I think positioning is better for them than the Gaviscon but agree really tiring and makes bedtime routine for DD tricky. DS did his first poo on his own this morning for weeks but downside is he's still regurgitating acid.
My DS is happy for a bit in his bouncer-baby bjorn one. Is expensive-a friend gave me this one but really worth it for getting DDs tea/bath ready with 2 hands!
My DS feeds well at night when he's sleepy-the only time he'll take a full feed in one go. During the day he's really fussy-1/2 oz at a time off and on all day. I find he takes more when propped up in his car seat.
Have you considered early weaning?

OP posts:
Popalina · 17/05/2014 10:15

Hi! I find the night feeds the most relaxed because she isn't gulping down air. The small snacks feeds are hard when you have another to entertain. Dd is only 7 weeks so I have a loooong way to go before weaning.

I have a bouncy chair but I think it will be more useful in a months time when she is older and has a bit more head control. Sadly she isn't keen on the sling.

Niths · 17/05/2014 10:28

My DS is coming up to 6 months now and we've been battling reflux for a long time now. Tried switching formula (cow&gate to aptamil), then aptamil anti-reflux, gaviscon, ranitidine and now finally back onto normal aptamil with omeprazole. Things changed dramatically once we started him off on omeprazole, he's so much more settled and feeding times aren't the stressful, screaming fests they were. He doesn't seem to be in pain, no arching his back, etc which is such a relief. You might want to see a paediatrician about getting a prescription for omeprazole (losec). He does spit up a bit but keeping him upright for 10-15 mins after every feed helps.

BelleBoyd · 17/05/2014 12:37

Our paed app has been brought forward and is 3 weeks. I'm hoping they'll suggest omeprazole. I'm not convinced the ranitidine and domperidone is working..should take him off them one at a time for a few days and see but I'm nervous he'll go back to the 8 hour screaming sessions he had before...

Hi, glad I found this thread! We have tried ranitidine and gaviscon along with reflux milk. The milk def helped with sickness but caused / causing constipation so we were given lactulose and movicol to use. Reflux ended up getting worse in the last few weeks (9wks on ranitidine) and we are frequently up for between 1 1/2 - 5 hours every night with a hurting baby. Prescribed omeprazole yesterday so just started taking it today. Stopped ranitidine and gaviscon. God I hope it works! The question is, and I would love your views....do we continue with reflux milk, go back to normal formula (this made her so much more sick immediately when given with gaviscon) or should we try comfort milk (a happy medium of thicker milk and meant to reduce constipation)????? Spent a bloody fortune on the stuff!

Wispa12345 · 17/05/2014 12:59

I should add DD is 7 months old. Gaviscon caused horrific constipation overnight too :-(

BelleBoyd · 17/05/2014 13:39

Mine was on hipp organic and I moved onto hipp hungry as he was eating so much but I reckon it also constipates so have just moved to the normal one again. I did try enfamil ar but he got in a right state with it-only drank a little/gagging/screaming. Did try a teat size up but the same reaction..
It so difficult to know what combination is helping or contributing to the reflux...

OP posts:
Popalina · 18/05/2014 07:11

Hi wisp a!
I read that you shouldn't use the thickened milks with anything added in...ie it's normal formula with meds or thickened milk.

Is hipp meant to be better for reflux? Also, are there any over the counter meds that are meant to work?
