so glad to have read this I used to make up bottles (without powder) and leave at room temp then add the powder before each feed - will change to using fresh hot water then cool and ready made stuff for when I am out and about

aitch71 · 03/09/2006 22:43

okay. but what if you boil the water, leave to cool in the bottles then reheat in the microwave to a pretty hot temp (approx equal to a kettle after 30 mins) and then add the powder? will that kill the bugs?

shedevil · 03/09/2006 23:11

not sure....could be ok as its the same temperature as it would be if as left to cool for 30 mins?

mrsbabookaloo · 04/09/2006 09:34

So does this mean that it's OK to make up the bottles, adding the formula while the water is still hot, then leave to cool in the fridge and take out and warm up when needed?

Why don't they give you this advice on the boxes of formula, instead of telling you to do it totally impractical way that nobody can do? Grrrr...

Jackstini · 04/09/2006 15:20

Quick & easy way my SIL uses:
Pour boiling water to half the amount you will need and put in sealed bottles in fridge
When feed required take out cold bottle of water, add the other half as freshly boiled water, then add formula.
Is correct temperature immediately!

angelaj1 · 04/09/2006 17:59

thats a really good idea!!

shedevil · 04/09/2006 18:27

jackstini is that the correct temperature for baby or the correct temperature for killing the germs in the powder then you cool it down for baby?

Jackstini · 05/09/2006 17:26

Correct temperature for feeding - was not aware of any germs in formula powder??

tiktok · 05/09/2006 17:32

Jacstini - see link in Mum2's post further down the thread. Powdered formula milk is not a sterile product and there have been some rare but serious/fatal cases of infection with a particular bug which is what has caused the change in the official guidance.

Jackstini · 05/09/2006 17:35

Must admit I am not v. clued up re formula as I am still bf-ing.
SIL swears by this tip though - got it from ante-natal classes AFAIK

shedevil · 05/09/2006 21:29

I didn't know anything about it either until I posted on this thread, glad I did though really grateful for the advice

Mum2FunkyDude · 05/09/2006 21:36

To aitch's question about nuking the water; It will kill the bugs. Be sure not to boil again as it concentrates the minerals in the water including salts and metals! The way we do it is, boil the water, leave 10 min, add powder, submerge bottle in cold water for 5 min, replace cold water with more cold water (as it warms a bit) and feed the baby when the temp is right. If you do a rapid cooldown the bugs don't get enough time to multiply significantly either. But never leave mixed formula for more than an hour, it goes off and smells horrible!

aitch71 · 06/09/2006 00:25

god, i wish my bollocking breastfeeding had worked out... why people think this is the easy option is beyond me...

mrsbabookaloo · 10/09/2006 16:58

Absolutely aitch71: i wish my bollocking breastfeeding had worked out too! Now dd is fidgeting and fussing like she did on the beast wehen i give her the bottle. AND all these questions about safety and all the faffing and paraphernalia....

So next question: when going out and about, should one take prepared formula that you've cooled, and keep it cool in a cool bottle holder, or take hot/warm water and measured out formula, and keep it warm and add the formula before the feed??

Mum2FunkyDude · 10/09/2006 17:05

mrsbabookaloo;

Yes, take seperately and mix when needed, some mums take a thermos with hot water. Me, I just buy the odd ready to drink carton.

Mandymoo · 10/09/2006 21:06

FGS - like a mum with a crying hungry baby has got time to faff around making every individual feed!

I will be preparing mine in advance and storing them in the fridge as i did last time with dd.

It makes me so angry - yet another thing to bloody worry about.

mears · 10/09/2006 21:11

current guidnace re feeds

Yes you can continue to make batch feeds if that is your informed choice and you know the risks.

Mandymoo · 10/09/2006 21:14

Sorry - i made up feeds in advance for 18 months with dd and she is now a healthy 3.5 yr old. I dont have the time nor the inclination to make up every individial feed. I would rather spend that time playing with me children. What happened years ago when our parents bottle fed us? There is such a thing as being too sterile you know.

OP posts:
Mum2FunkyDude · 10/09/2006 21:15

Personal choice, but as Mears points out, if you know the risks and decide to do it that way!

Mandymoo · 10/09/2006 21:18

Yeah - i appreciate the link mears. Wasnt having a go!

Just having a bad day !

aitch71 · 10/09/2006 21:23

mrs babookaloo...
and now a question for mum2funkydude.
how do you manage to get those ready-made cartons opened up without it spilling all over the place?

Mum2FunkyDude · 10/09/2006 21:25

nail scissors!

Mum2FunkyDude · 10/09/2006 21:27

Put the carton on the table, open flap flat and cut while holding the box at the bottom. With a pair of smallish scissors (more control).

aitch71 · 10/09/2006 21:54

...and jump backwards as fishy-smelling milk splurts out all over you.
