my 4 month old dd has had reflux which is not too much of a concern overall as she is putting on weight very well & it doesn't seem to bother het that she is sick quie often . However doctor gave me infant gaviscon a couple of months ago which sometimes stops her being sick. But i'm quite reluctant to keep using it and wondered if switching to cow and gate omneo comfort milk might help? Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, if the gaviscon does work then you actually would have a case for going back to your GP and asking for 'enfamil AR'. It's a special kind of milk that does basically what the gaviscon does but without the problem of adding extra sodium to the feed. It doesn't have the antacid though so just be aware she may not be AS comfortable though at 4 months you'll probably find she's on the way to improving loads anyway. There shouldn't be a problem with the GP prescribing enfamil becasue it costs about the same for them to give as gaviscon so no budget worries. If you need 'backup' support your HV might be able to provide some (mine wrote a letter). The bonus of being prescribed milk is also that it's free! hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions if you like - we used it until DS was one and old enough to go onto cow's milk.

Liquidclocks, how do the enfamil compare to sma stay down? do you know?

pigletandme · 29/08/2006 16:49

do you prepare enfamil in the same way as normal formula or does it have to be made with warm water?

Hi - enfamil is similar to sam staydown milk as far as I know but my HV did have a reason for suggesting it over the sma - sorry I can't remember why - may have just been that we could get enfamil on prescripton.

You make enfamil slightly differently to normal milk where I believe the current advice is to use freshly boiled water. With enfamil you boil thewater then have to cool it quickly (fridge will do) so I'd fill a full kettle in the morning then fill a jug up in the fridge for the day's supply. This is because the formula is heat activated so when it warms up it begins to congeal which is what makes it stay down - though it doesn't happen instantly so when it's drunk it has the same consistency as normal milk and you can warm it normlly (if you make it with hot water though you get lumps).

Hope this helps you both

so could you just put the water in sterilised bottles and cool in the fridge and then add the enfamil when needed?
