Anyone's Baby on Prescribed Neocate?

Hi, just wondering if anyone else's baby is on this? My 5 month old has had constant diarrhoea for over 2 months now (10+ dirty nappies per day and through night) resulting in horrendous nappy rash and after several trips to the GP with no joy we took him to hospital where they diagnosed a possible lactose intolerance or cows milk intolerance.

They tried Nutramigen first which initially seemed to be working as he went down to 2 dirty nappies per day, but that only lasted a week and we were back to square one again. So they put him on Neocate a week ago and he's now averaging about 5 dirty nappies per day. Just wondering if anyone knows how long it should take for things to settle down and also (sorry tmi) but the smell of the poo now would knock you out it's so bad! We have to air the entire house most of the day after he's gone. Need to know if that's normal.

I'm keeping on top of the nappy rash by cleaning with cotton wool and water and using egg white at every change, in addition to a spray and a cream the hospital gave us. This works pretty well during the day as I watch him like a hawk and change him asap, however he always poos through the night and if its in his sleep and he doesn't wake it just burns his skin and he wakes screaming in pain. It's awful and has got to the stage I'm barely sleeping and changing his nappy during the night.

I just want to know if anyone has experienced this and if there is an end in sight as I also have a 2.5yr old and he is really suffering due to all the time I'm having to spend changing nappies and cleaning up. Also baby will be ready for weaning soon and my looking forward to it has now turned to dread as I'm scared he'll react to lots of different foods as well. Thanks for reading.x

Milk proteins can take a while to leave the system and also it can take a while for any damage to be repaired. I don't think having BMs that regularly or with such an unpleasant odour would be normal in the longer term, but hopefully you will find him getting better little by little. I would say if there is NO further improvement after another week he needs to be seen again and other causes investigated. He's not on ranitidine is he?

Thanks for that Headache. I'm trying to keep notes each day so I can tell if there are any improvements and/or see any patterns. We are waiting on a paediatric referral and are already being seen by a dietician so hopefully we will have some more definite answers soon. I can always call the dietician and ask, but wanted to give it a bit more time as it has only been a week. He's not on anything else at all.
