Help us create a breastfeeding map of the UK

Breastfeeding hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons again this week, after news broke of a mother being asked to leave a branch of Sports Direct after she breastfed her baby there. It's hugely important, of course, that we all pick up on stories such as this, and offer support to mothers who are made to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about feeding their children when they're out and about - but at times it can feel like playing catch-up.

It seemed to us that we could take this opportunity to change the rules of the game, and start celebrating those places - and companies - that make feeding on the move easy and enjoyable. So we decided to start a thread asking you to tell us about your favourite places to feed your DC in public.

Whether it's a park bench overlooking a nice duck pond or a particularly cosy corner of a cafe, we'd love to see your pictures of your tried-and-tested spots to feed your little ones. Please add them to this thread, along with their location - if we have enough submissions, what we'd really like to do is create a breastfeeding map of the UK, featuring great feeding spots up and down the country.

We've a page full of tips and advice on how to breastfeed in public, please do add any other pearls of wisdom you'd like to share below. If you want to chat about places to breastfeed in your area, why not start a thread in your Mumsnet Local site, or add a venue you love as a listing?

Deli nene in beckenham and Bromley are very breastfeeding and child friendly

Sheffield is great - love that website, even though at 2+ I'm not bfing anymore.

I've had lots of positive experiences - and I like the choice of going to a quiet baby room e.g. in John Lewis/mothercare meadowhall if baby is a little unsettled and needs quiet time, and the option of carrying on with the rest of the family in a restaurant etc.

Barnsley Court was a little rubbish...they directed me to the toilets. I asked the woman if that's where she ate her lunch and she looked slightly bewildered.

The Arthouse Cafe in Penistone is lovely lovely lovely.

Nottingham and West Bridgford are very good. John Lewis offer a comfortable room in which to feed (should you need/desire privacy), but I fed everywhere. One of the employees in Natwest in West Bridgford brought me a cup of water (unbidden), remarking that the mere sight of a breastfeeding woman brought back memories of terrific thirst. That act of kindness is one I've passed on a couple of times.

I generally found kindness and goodwill wherever I went. And anyone who felt otherwise certainly never had the courage to say so to my face.

Costa coffee in Walsall Art Gallery are always lovely, always carry food over and smile at me.

Isn't it illegal to tell someone to stop breastfeeding in public?!! Shame on Sportsdirect! However in Glasgow Silverburn have a good feeding place and I must congratulate intuBraehead for there very well designed breastfeeding and changing room...they have numerous changing facilities within the area, a feeding place for bottle/breast feeders and another breastfeeding section for those who prefer a more private area...all in nicely decorated and relaxing environment! Well done! :)

LocalEditorEaling · 14/05/2014 23:02

From what we have heard so far, London Ealing is actually quite bf-friendly (i.e normal).

Well, apart from Sports Direct in Ealing Broadway, that is.

There was a "Nurse-in" demo there a couple of weeks ago in support of the Nottingham mother. 12 women, absolutely no trouble. They have called the Police on them!!! Total waste of their resources, of course. They came, they looked, they left.

Keep sharing the specific places in the Borough on our local - so we can do a detailed map.

Thank you!

Harvester pub in Bourne end next to Hemel Hempstead train station. I breastfed my second child and no one battered an eye lid, I am quite a young mum in respect I was about 19 at the time I was surrounded by people and all was fine! Quite nice really because I was nervous about doing it. I've fed at car shows walking around again no one commented that was in Aston Clinton.

Exeter - the cafe in the Phoenix Arts Centre.

Next in Exeter had a cafe at that time (20 years ago) and I was told to stop feeding my dtws there because it 'wasn't appropriate' Shock Angry.

TeaAddict235 · 21/05/2014 16:34

High Wycombe: Sainsburys cafe upstairs, Costa coffee and the Boots feeding room (at the back of the store), also Harvesters in Marlow are really friendly and accommodate newborns without any problem Smile

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 21/05/2014 17:59

Virtually every cafe in north essex with three babies (not all at the same time!) Starbucks in Saffron Walden is particularly baby friendly, nice staff and good baby changing facilities.

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 21/05/2014 18:02

Oh, and strangest place i've breastfed? During a job interview - I got the job Grin

10152530 · 21/05/2014 19:40

At Lidl in Slough, had to put few washing powder flat like a stool and sat comfortably breastfeeding my 3 months old last year Grin

PollyP0429 · 22/05/2014 12:03

Clacton seafront on hotter days :) and wat tyler park in Basildon. The cafe has a veranda of sorts, nicely shaded and out of the way if you want privacy

AnotherStitchInTime · 02/06/2014 21:55

London buses and tubes - never had a bad comment
Parks all over London
Thames Riverside

Fulham Sainsburys has a discrete curtained off cubicle with a seat in the baby change room, for those less inclined to just wip em out anywhere.
Westfield Shepherds Bush
Wandsworth Sainsburys Cafe
The Lyric Hammersmith
London Museums - free, dry, good seating to be found
South Bank
Hounslow Urban Farm - whilst feeding the goats!
Bridport High Street whilst walking through on market day
Bridport Library

AnotherStitchInTime · 02/06/2014 21:57

Discreet

Patilla · 03/06/2014 09:00

Sheffield John Lewis. They have a comfortable feeding room but I've fed happily in the cafe a number of times. I once realised DD was still hungry and so dashed back to the cafe to feed her, hoping it would be ok that I'd bought something earlier and no one even batted an eyelid at me sitting there, in fact a member of staff clearing tables nearby offered me a glass of water.

It was so nice to actually feel supported feeding in public.

SuddenRealisation · 03/06/2014 23:38

The comfy leathery sofas on Metro Centre Gateshead are idle for a feed when you're shopping Smile

SuddenRealisation · 03/06/2014 23:40

I'll try again, the comfy leathery sofas in Metro Centre Gateshead are ideal for a feed whilst shoppingSmile

MOTU · 04/06/2014 21:45

I have been breastfeeding on and off for three years and have been welcome everywhere including in many very conservative church's. The only place I felt uncomfortable was at an exhibition at earls court, an older gentle man did some very passive aggressive "humphing" but moved off after my sister started loudly quizzing me on public breastfeeding law. She lives to make a point my sis!!

The lovely cafe at Cresswell Crags- stunning view whatever the weather, fab cake and drinks and staff always offer to bring my tray out for me. Plus you can go for a lovely flat walk with the buggy afterwards. Definitely my best public feeding spot so far. They also do rhyme time on the first Monday of every month which is fab xoxo
