wet nappies in a 4 day old breasted baby..

my friend is now home from hospital (see earlier posts) and is concerned about lack of wet nappies. Her milk started coming in last night I think. He had a wet one at 5pm, she's just checking again now. But none have been as wet as the '40ml weight' nappy rul thing. She has some nipple cracking and is really dreading feeds. Trying to help with the latching over msn at the moment :-)

But anyway, her DH is away to the shop for formula as she's really worried about her DS dehydrating from ineffective/still learning feeding.

Any thoughts on wet nappies?

sorry - the 'rule' is that a 'wet' nappy weighs about the same (in your hand) as one with 40ml water in it. It's something to help folk gauge what's wet so to speak. Having said that, I would think that real wet ones would only be coming trhough once milk is coming through for a day or so. Definately wet nappy though.

He has had formula a few times as had a day in SCBU as he and mum both had an infection and weren't well. But no more since sunday morning I don't think. not sure if the midwives would be much help since they were always trying to push formula a bit...

Sorry, not heard that one before. Persoanlly I found it hard to tell a wet nappy in the early days.

Feed little and often, he's only got the teeniest of tummies atm . Can she express and feed that to him instead, otherwise she'll run the risk of getting engorged and potentially create more problems for herself.

and has she got a cream for cracked nipples ? Found Kamillosan was good for that and nappy rash !

For the nipples get her some 'Lansinoh' from Boots, it's about a tenner, but worth every penny. It's so soothing and you don't have to wash it off before feeds.

she's on the Lansinoh :-) I do recall having to rip nappies open in those early weeks to check for wee too!

Hard to tell in the early days what constitutes a wet nappy, isn't it! Especially with disposables, which are ultra absorbent - easier to gauge with cloth ones. Sounds like your friend needs encouragement and some help from a breastfeeding counsellor to ensure good latch etc. The lasinoh will help but it is having a good latch on which makes a difference - and changing baby's nursing position so the pressure isn't always in the same spot. Her milk will come in soon - avoiding dummies so baby is working at bringing her milk in is also helpful Introducing formula will get in the way of the supply and demand process, though it is nerve racking if you fear your baby is hungry and you are in pain. If your friend does need to give formula, it may help if it is given by spoon/from a cup/via a syringe rather than sucking on a bottle teat, as that can make getting the baby back on the breast harder afterwards - it is a completely different sucking action. All the best for a successful outcome - and well done to you for caring

I guess she is struggling with disposables to tell whether they are wet or not? Could she not put something inside - a hanky or something - to see that the baby is weeing as I'm sure he his. With cloth it is a lot easier to tell you see.
With her milk coming in he will be getting more and more at each feed so it seems such a shame to start formula now.

crossed posts Dazz!!

I've sent her this thread so she may add to it herself... or may discover the benefits of mumsnet at 3am...! Sounds like things are going better apart from excrutiating nipples. Hopefully she can find a counsellor tomorrow and try and get the latch improved. I think that he's getting there, as she is, but sore nipples and confidence/tiredness/baby blues/worry etc are getting to her. Promised her it gets better!

my babies nappies didnt even look wet at this stage I tried to tke one apart to check in a really scared moment!
my nipples also hurt for a few weeks and this is my third but it does settle quickly its scarey the first time isnt it (what am I on about its my third and I still worrying that I am doing right!)
as soon as she sees the baby is putting on weight and the baby blues go she will be fine sounds like she has a great friend to help her as well

oh yes, the weight gain is a fab moment... I used to think "my body made stuff (for free!) that made my baby chubby" and go about all smug!
