Do formula measuring pots need to be sterilised?

You know the wee travel pots for measuring formula? They're very hard to dry after they've been sterilised (without using something thatr isn't sterile like paper towels!) Is there a problem with not sterlising them? Also- the tommee tippee bottles we bought hold the water and the little pot inside them. Would that not make the cooled boiled water less sterile if the wee put was touching it?! Confusion....

With DC1 I was paranoid that it had to be 'sterile' and had similar anxiety to you so I just bought the ready made cartons and used those.

Dd is on anti reflux milk which you can't buy ready made so have to use it. I realise now that the reason you sterilise it is to kill the milk bacteria and that it doesn't actually need to be sterile. Dd is always sucking her fingers, muslins etc and they're not sterile.

So, I sterilise it and then dry it with kitchen roll so any harmful milk bacteria are killed off. So far we've had no problems.

Hope that helps

The bacteria is in the powdered milk. The water above 70 degrees will kill that bacteria.

We did not sterilise the pots - just washed and dried them. We took the water in a flask so there was no water in the bottle. Tbh, we used cartons when out and about as much as possible.

Someone explained the whole sterilising thing on here recently very well. I can't remember who, but the gist of it was that things which have containing milk need to be sterilised. They do not have to be sterile. There's a subtle difference.

I think as long as everything is washed quickly and thoroughly and then sterilised, you don't have to worry about the air polluting them.

I would wash the formula container out thoroughly every day but not worry about sterilising it, as long as you always use very hot water to make your milk up I can't see a problem.

The powder that you put in them isn't sterile so sterilising them seems pointless. The powder needs to be heated to 70 degrees to kill the bacteria anyway.
