Reusable nappies - help!

So we're thinking about using reusable nappies for DD and I'm after some insider advice...

  1. Which brand did you like best and why?
  1. What did you find was the most efficient way of washing? (When and how?)
  1. Did it save you any money avoiding disposables?
  1. Do you have any general tips?

Thank you Grin

I hired a trial kit from the local authority. It had most brands on sale. It helped me figure out what I liked (pocket nappies) and which brand fit DD (BumGenius Version 4). I was a little upset as I had my heart set on Tots Bots Easyfits Grin We didn't use cloth overnight.

Given the initial outlay, the pre washing and and washing, I'm not certain we have saved any money. Aldi's disposables aren't expensive. However, we are due DC2 in Aug and, I think, that's where the real savings lie. I found reusable wipes saved us a fortune though. We used Cheeky Wipes - bamboo for bottoms and Microfibre for faces. If you are at all crafty, you can simply make your own.

I wash every second day. I have a Tots Bots locking nappy pail (toddler proof!) with a mesh bag inside. The nappies and bottom wipes go into the mesh bag and then I simply pick up the bag and pop it into the machine. You need very little laundry powder. Out and about, I use the Cheeky Wipes double wet bags - small for faces and medium for bottoms (it fits both the dirty nappies & wipes). I have a large double wet bag for the childminder.

I would recommend getting in touch with the waste dept of your local authority to see if they offer any kits or incentives. Check for local nappy libraries and/or postal nappy libraries. Go to The Nappy Lady's website and fill in her questionnaire for excellent advice and an ongoing discount that lasts a year. Real Nappy Week is approaching so you could pick up some bargains. There are preloved websites too.
