Vitamin D supplements.

I'm breast feeding my baby (18 days old) and the other day my HV asked me if I was taking Vitamin D supplements - which I wasn't.

My husband bought me done earlier and when I read the information on the bottle it said you must consult your GP before taking them in pregnancy. This implies to me that they can be harmful??

Are they ok to take whilst breastfeeding??

Or are there specific ones out there for breast feeding mothers? The ones my DH bought are just an ASDA's own brand.

Yes, Pregnacare do a specific multi vitamin for post natal mothers. The NHS also have Healthy Start vitamins for both babies and mums - available from your pharmacy.

Is it a problem though if I take vitamin D supplements that aren't Pregnacare brand? I'd hate to think I was doing harm by just taking a generic, store brand supplement.....

I doubt if your doing any harm, they probably sent very strong. I am bf but don't know anything about vitamin D, no one mentioned it to me... off to Google!

It's prob a good idea to take a specific post natal multi vitamin but I'm sure more than Pregnacare make them. Pop into your local pharmacy tomorrow to get some advice.

Do most mums take multi vitamins whilst bf? It never occurred to me to take any!

I have been googling it throughout the day and the dose of my supplements is the same as all the recommendations. I really want to take baby outside so he can get some natural Vitamin D but after my CS I can barely walk up the stairs without hurting, let alone go for a walk. I might take him outside in the back garden tomorrow though Smile

Vitamin D is recommended here from birth in Canada. My city is on the same latitude as Edinburgh. My DS used to get Vit D drops which were tasteless. As he's now 2, he gets a fruit flavoured gummy.

I took vitamin supplements throughout my pregnancy and for the 2.25 years I breastfed.

Another Canadian here, it's common practice to give babies (and ourselves) vitamin d drops back home. As long as it's D3, I wouldn't worry about the brand or any "warnings" on the label. I think companies just say that to be over cautious.

Thanks both,

I doubt my own levels of Vitamin D are very high so I'm sure baby's levels would also be pretty low seeing as he's reliant on me. I started taking the supplements last night Smile

Sorry, butting in, writer if you are that sore after cs something is not healing properly. Please get check out by the gp, eat well and rest.

Ironically enough I spoke to my doctor this morning about the pains/discomfort that I'm having and she thinks it's just because I'm over exerting myself, not resting enough and not giving myself enough time to heal. I live in a 3 storey house so am constantly up and down the stairs and I know I'm not resting as much as I should. It's so hard though to just lie on a sofa all day when mentally I feel so well. My mom has come to stay with me for 3 days (arrived today) in order to make sure I'm fully resting. She hasn't let me do anything except get off the sofa to go the toilet Smile You're never too old to be looked after by your mom Smile
