Very windy baby.

I wasn't too sure where to post this but thought I'd opt for here Smile

I have a 16 day old (incredibly gorgeous) little boy and me and DH are really struggling with his wind.

He wasn't a windy baby initially but last Wednesday he was started on oral antibiotics four times a day and we were warned it might upset his stomach. He's normally very good throughout the night but on Thursday and Friday night we had absolute hell as he just wouldn't stop screaming for hours on end and nothing we did could soothe him. I spoke to the midwife on the Friday and she suggested we start using Infacol but that it could take up to 48 hours before we see the benefit.

It has definitely made a positive difference as we are getting more wind out of DS and last night he slept really well again.

However, today I noticed his abdomen is quite distended which I'm assuming is build up of wind and he is also vomiting a little after every feed. This vomiting happens straight away and follows me changing his position - I'm guessing the milk had been sitting on top of an air bubble or something.

Has anyone else's baby been on antibiotics and had this problem? Me and DH are so hoping that once he's finished the course all this stomach discomfort and trapped wind will ease. We hate seeing him uncomfortable and distressed.

Do you think his abdomen is anything to worry about? He's still happy and alert in himself, feeding regularly and having regular wet and dirty nappies.

I'm just a first time mom who worries about everything Smile

Can understand why you are concerned, writer.....but babies often bring back a bit of milk in exactly the way you describe and their tummies can often appear taut and full just like you say. It would be hard to be sure if these things were anything other than normal. Crying and being hard to settle is also pretty common, though so hard to cope with when it goes on for hours.

It might have something to do with antibiotics of course. I don't know if you will ever know for sure. If it doesn't get better then you can ask midwife or Hv about it.

Hope you have a better night.

what anti b is he on??
ds was on trimethaprine (sp) since birth. now 8 weeks old. he stopped taking the anti b's at 6 weeks so been off them for 2 weeks.
every hcp i spoke to promised me the anti b wouldn't be the cause of his extreme wind and unsettledness. he was very windy and upset alot of the time.
since stopping the anti b i have seen quite a big improvement. it may be coincidence but he is def less windy now.
i have also made some other changes as had a massive over supply (ebf) so that may have helped but i don't think anti b's do little tums very well!!

how is he fed?

Tongue tie can give v windy baby. But also bad latch generally.

Writerwannabe83 · 07/04/2014 00:50

He's breast fed. I had issues with latch when I first had him but things are much better now and two midwives and the HV have observed me feed and said the latch is perfect.

feekerry - can I ask how you dealt with over supply? I do worry that I have this problem as my breasts produce a lot of milk, they are constantly leaking, and when DS starts feeding I can hear him absolutely guzzling the milk down.

He is on Flucloxacillin.

i now feed mostly lying down side by side as ds allows excess milk to dribble out. i also block feed (so feed of just one side for next 3/4/5 hours etc before switching) to encourage boobs to make less milk. in fact i normally do 6 hours on one side before switching.
he also pulls off just before let down which is like a jet stream so i catch that in a muslin then put him back on once its stopped.
he is so much happier and less windy. he also comfort feeds now which he never did.
i think as they get bigger they also learn to deal with the milk flow better!
