If I have to FF, is organic any better?

And if so any particular brand?

Luckily I have some advance warning this time around that I may have to FF for medical reasons. Last time I did an eeny meeny miny mo to choose on the spot in a labour ward when I hadn't even considered the possibility of FF.

Ar there any types that are 'better' than others or ingredients to steer clear of?

I know this is a really emotive area and would prefer not to have any 'breast is best' advice on this thread, it's hard enough as it is. Thanks.

To be honest didnt even know you could get organic. I think the formula you use tends to be down to personal preference. I alwyas used SMA but with dd she had to be put onto a special formula for reflux as sma just made it worse. Sorry not much help really.

liquidclocks · 20/08/2006 11:39

Yes, same here, DS was put on enfamil for reflux so I didn't get a choice. I'm hoping this LO won't have though and I've read that Hipp milk is organic but I've also read that no food that's had pesticides etc. is allowed in baby food anyway. So wondering what the benefits of organic might be if there are any.

I think that it helps a bit, but it is more expensive, I fed mine Babynat they are a french brand and they do a goat formula too. If I have to FF then I would choose this again but this time the goat as it supposed to be easier to digest.

liquidclocks · 20/08/2006 12:16

Thanks tumblemum - I've not heard of that one, do know where I'd get it from?

liquidclocks - just be sure that you are being advised correctly whether or not you can breastfeed for medical reasons - I have seen reasons on here that are just not true.

I am not sure Organic is any better than traditional TBH. What did you use last time?

mears · 20/08/2006 12:40

sorry - have just seen you used enfamil.

liquidclocks, not much is known about the health properties of different formula milks, but if I had to FF I would be investigating the organic milks too.

You can get BabyNat here and they have the goat variety too. I think Hipp do an organic formula, don't they?

liquidclocks · 20/08/2006 12:49

Sorry, medical reason is to do with me, not baby. With DS switched from trying to BF to FF on day 3. Day 14 we were advised to switch to enfamil rather than using farleys + gaviscon after a hospital stay. Have already posted about why I may not be able to BF on previous thread.

Pruni - the feeling of doing something right is exactly why I'm exploring this option. I really hope it won't come to this for a while but I want to do the best even if it's not breast IYSIM. Hope to BF for 3 months before I go back to work but liklihood is probably more like a week - but I keep being told something is better than nothing so going to try. BUT, when I do make the switch I want it to be to the best available option.

I think even if there are not major health benefits to having organic (and there may be for all I know), the fact that the formula has been prepared using organic methods means that it is better for the planet, and for all our babies' futures

When DD switched over to formula at around 9 months we used Hipp Organic milk. I don't know if there are any real benefits, but as I was making the effort to wean DD on organic food I thought I should give organic milk as well. I chose Hipp because I found it tastes and smells better than other formulas! sorry that's not much help, but it was the only reason I could find for choosing a particular brand.

mears · 20/08/2006 13:02

Have posted on your other thread.

Thanks mears- have read your post. Have head midwife coming over for 'a chat' this week so will ask if my hospital had an advisor like the one you mention. Trouble is I've found that it's impossible to get a decent answer out of anyone regarding medication safety. Will be trying all the options I have open re meds but with the severity and frequency of my attacks I feel I should be prepared for the alternative IYSWIM. It's been hard to be taken seriously by the hospital staff because they equate my condition to someone who has maybe one attack every month/couple of months. My doctor does get the impact of the attacks on my life but thinks I'm making my life overly difficult by trying to BF and has advised to just FF again.

TBH without mumsnet I don't know what I'd do (probably just FF again without a second thought), I just wish I'd discovered it before I had DS. I think all of you have actually given me the courage to try again this time and demand the help and support I need rather than just taking eveything I'm told by the midwives/docs as gospel.

Merrily - did you taste it yourself? I could never bring myself to taste DS's milk! The smell put me off the few times I tried - yuck!!!

I mix the bottles up at room temperature, for dd, and found that Hipp Organic didn't mix well, you could still see the powder clinging to the sides of the bottle. So switched to regular Cow & Gate 'cause I knew that it mixed well as had used it for ds before dd came along. Wanted to get a widely available formula so I could get it at local shops, etc. and couldn't do that with Cow & Gate Organic, heard that you shouldn't mess around with the type of formula you give them too much, not good for their tummies, don't know if it's true.

liquidclocks · 20/08/2006 21:46

Thanks for that flutterbye - good to know about it not mixing. I've heard you should try and stick to the same formula too though I'm not sure why.
