Does anyone know whether green tea can interfere with bf? i havent drunk green tea, coffee, alcohol for a year now. last week i started to drink green tea(quite a lot) and my milk supply diminished significantly. Not sure why it has happened. Any thoughts? May be it is a growth spurt to be blamed? tia

What makes you think your milk supply has gone down

privet · 20/08/2006 20:57

For 2 days dd cried after feeding and only settled after i gave her a bit of water and topup formula for the night sleep. I stopped drinking green tea and drank about 4litres to stimulate milk production. It is better now but i am afraid to drink any herbal tea now.
Just wanted to know what was it. thanks

Fennel tea stimulates milk production. Green tea isn't a problem as long as it is drank in reasonable quantities.... not sure if 4 liters qualifies

Might have been the tea - but it probably wouldnt have affected your supply - green tea has caffiene & babies can get a bit grizzly from mums caffein intake. See this & this

Could also have been from a spurt though - 4 month one is usually a biggy. Just keep bf & lose the top ups they will affect your suplly more than anything as supply is driven by milk being removed from the breasts.

Hi. Thanks for replies. V good link terramum. Pupuce I thought 4litres is too much but a MW insisted on it when i had problems with milk 3 monhs ago, i couldnt drink so much at first. Now i drink at least 2 cups before and 2 after each feeding. You can imaging how often i use wc, lol.

Privet - MWs don't always have good BF advice sadly.!!!
At our BF clinic last week a mum came in with a 10 day old and she ahd jsut been told she should eat a mars bar and havea cup of cocoa before bedtime.... and a few weks agoo another came in with "you mus eat animal protein"... this woman was a vegetarian.. this is all 2006 and community midwives !!!!

Privet - I have never heard of drinking fluids before & after feeds to increase supply - thats a myth! Drinking 4 litres a day sounds dangerous tbh - the recommended intake for adults is around 1.2 litres . Obviously if you are severely dehydrated that can affect the milk, but simply drinking normally to quench your thirst is sufficient (although you might find that you do feel incredibly thirsty whilst bf - I know I did!)Drinking more will not increase your supply at all. Your milk supply is led my how much & often the milk is removed from the breats. If milk is removed then they recieve a signal that they need to produce more. Drinking huge amounts of anything will not change that. Sounds like your mw needs to update her training.

This link about milk supply might interest you as might this on about what a nursing mum needs to eat or drink.

Hi. As i mentioned initially i was forcing myself to drink but now it is like a bad habit, if i have a spare min i go and drink fluids. Somedays my body weight has a 2kg difference in the morning and in the evening(i guess it is retained fluids but i am not swollen). I thought of reducing amount of fluids i take but afraid it can affect milk supply.
May be i should start expressing milk(to stimulate production) and then slowly reduce fluids intake?

Privet - please read the links I have posted - the amount you drink will make no difference to your milk supply.

A quick update for terramum- i am all done with excessive water drinking, bf is ok. I am very pleased with the result, thanks for the advice and support.

privet - increasing your fluid intake does not increase your milk supply. There is some evidence that dinking too much can actually inhibit milk production. Just drink as your thirst dictates. The best way to boost supply is to feed more. The baby sucking stimulates milk. Be careful of topping up with water/formula because that can disturb the balance. Breastfed babies do not need either.
At 4.5 months your milk is well and truly establishes. Sounds as though your dd is going through a growth spurt and looking for extra feeds. You'll find that after a few days of extra feeds she will settle back down again.

terramum · 24/08/2006 20:59

No problem Privet - glad I could help

sorrell · 24/08/2006 21:01

Four month old babies are notoriously and famously unsettled. Grow, wake up a lot etc etc. Nothing to do with tea.

privet · 24/08/2006 22:29

thanks for your post. i hope thar was not coz of green tea as i really like it and was given a box of genuine jasmine tea hmmmm. will try it in a week or so. meanwhile back to bf, dd is calling.
