Bottle teat size

We have used a size 1 newborn teat until now as our almost 5 month old has always been the ravenous type and we thought the slow teat might be the best way to get her to take her time and realise she was getting full. She certainly manages to down her 6oz feeds in no time through the tiny hole.

But is there a strong reason to switch to a faster flow?

I am wondering if she is getting attached to the strong sucking action. Perhaps this might also have something to do with her very frequent hiccups. What to do?

Hi. I've been in a very similar situation with both my kids. Both were hungry babies and I found that if you switched to the next size up teat not only do they get their feed that bit quicker but also by sucking so hard on a smaller newborn size teat increases the problem with colic because they are sucking so hard they're more likely to take in more air. Also if you switch to a bigger teat your baby won't be quite so exhausted afterwards and you'll find she'll be more relaxed afterwards rather than, perhaps, a bit fractious being so worn out. Also I'd seriously consider upping the size of the teat because she is, after all, 5 months old and no longer a newborn!!!

Also!!! Hiccups - not a problem as far as I know. Both mine had regular hiccups. They grow out of them eventually. Don't worry about them. Pretty normal.

Oh, I know hiccups are quite normal. They're just quite annoying (especially when she is about to go to sleep when the arrive). She never minded until 2/3 months but now finds them pretty irritating.

Yeah they are annoying and tiring for her too. I can only go on my own experiences with my two kids but I would definitely consider changing her teat to the next size up. If it doesn't help then you can always revert back to the smaller one. Neither of mine were on the newborn size 1 teat for very long because they were such hungry babies. In fact my youngest (who is now 2.7) was guzzling a 9oz feed quicker than I could make it at about 5 months old!

Thanks. I think I'll try her out. On past experience with the hungry one I expect a 'yard of ale' type outcome!
