Collapsing Teats

Am just trying to switch from breast to bottle feeding. DS really likes Boots Orthodontic Variflow teats, but when I use them, they keep collapsing in on themselves so no milk comes through. Am using with Boots wide necked bottle so should be ok

Sorry - meant to say, does anyone know why this is, is it my technique? Completely new to bottle feeding, so any advice would be most welcome!

Wonder if this is right forum but does anyone have advice on giving formula to baby in hope that she will sleep better? She is 14 weeks and still feeds of me every two hours during night (Am breastfeeding) concerned that could make her worse as has been suffering with colic and wakes during night with trapped wind!
Many thanks

The only teats I have ever found to be any good atall in all my years of mothering are avent variflow. They don't collapse and let the right amount of milk through. But no others, that's my humble advice

Yep, I agree with kittywits, avent are the only teats that don't collapse, but you need to use them with avent bottles otherwise the bottles leak really badly.

I found that myy dd got the hang of the collapsing quite quickly and just let go an little bit to let the air back in, to begin with I'd pull them out of her mouth a little to do it.

HTH.

Loobylo, meant to say, start a new thread in the Breast and Bottle feeding section - do it by the bottom blue option just at the top of this thread, above the last post.

Hi there

I am breast and bottle feeding and am using Tommee Tippee 'closer to nature' bottles with the v wide teats that are supposed to act like nipples , and help go easiely between breast and bottle. They also have a valve type thingy which allows the air to flow in during feeding, supposedly preventing collapsing teat syndrome.

On the slow flow teats my baby never got collapsing teats, the valve worked really well. Now he's on the medium flow he does sometimes if he's sucking really hard, I assume because the valve can't keep up with the demand for air! I just have to pop him off while it re-inflates, but this also lets him catch his breath so it works OK. He's a bit of a greedy pig so I kept him on slow flow for a fair while longer than it says on the packs, to stop him choking himself!

If your baby likes the Boots orthodontic, how about trying a slow flow one to start with? Maybe this would help if he is like my little munchkin and eats too fast for the air to catch up?

xx
