I will be leaving dd for 14 hours during the day 8am to 10pm when she is 9 months old - how much breast milk will she need to get her through? I know they are all different but anyone else who has done this I would be pleased to hear some anectdotal evidence. She is only 3 now but hoping to build up my freezer supply.

Tumblemum, my tip is to weigh her nappies in the course of a day to get a rough idea what ballpark she is in.
When I left my dd at 6 months it was around 22-4 oz over 24 hours but needed more because of wastage.
You might find that once you start to leave her she takes more when you are around and less during the day - a friend of mine who left her ds found that.

Mum2FunkyDude · 17/08/2006 10:56

My baby takes about 180ml in morning, 80-120ml afternoon and another 140-160ml evening, the rest is made up with cheese, yogurt and cow's milk on weetabix. Should take around 16-20oz according to weaning guidelines.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/08/2006 10:58

I used to do about 6 floz a bottle x 4 when DD was same age and at nursery.

kiskidee · 17/08/2006 11:00

you need to look at the storage guidelines for ebm. i think stocking up now may not be a good idea.

Mum2FunkyDude · 17/08/2006 11:06

Kiskidee is right, I ebm for 8 months, the requirements for a 3month old and 9 month old differs, and it is recommended you don't store for more than 3months in deep freezer, 1 week in normal freezer and 24 hours in fridge. I stored 24 hours in fridge, works better and its fresher, I used to express as I woke up and just before went to bed, used to be enough!

prettybird · 17/08/2006 11:18

The literature I was given at the hpostial was EBM could be stored for 6 months in a "good" freezer (ie not just the compartment at the top of firdge).

hunkermunker · 17/08/2006 11:21

You're fine to store EBM from now - you'll need to get her used to taking it, plus it gets you in the habit of expressing - just use the stuff you express now before it's 6mo and then just use the oldest stuff first.

hunkermunker · 17/08/2006 11:22

You can keep it eight days in the fridge - just keep it in the back of the fridge, not the door. It's totally fine then.

Mum2FunkyDude, it may not be enough to only express twice if you're leaving a baby for 14 hours. And I'm not sure what you mean by "works better"?

KathyMCMLXXII · 17/08/2006 11:28

Storage guidelines vary according to who you ask - the La Leche League is very relaxed about it (6 months fine according to them, in a proper freezer).

What I also found, was that the amount you express gets more and more over time as you get better at it/supply increases, so it didn't take long to get through the early stuff. If you intend to do anything at all that uses ebm (eg go out for the night leaving dd with babysitter) you just use the earliest stuff for that (sorry, this is really obvious, I know!) so you will have got through some of it by the time she is 9 months anyway - in other words, the stuff you are actually using come 9 months won't be as old as 6 months because you will have already used the oldest stuff. If you see what I mean!

For this reason I don't see why you shouldn't start stocking up now.

X-posts Hunker - how come you explained it so elegantly in one sentence and I made such a meal of it?

I used to literally bfeed in the car before i dropped ds1 off at 8.30.
He never took ebm until the first day i left him and i never tried to give it to him either.
Sent 4 bags each about 6 ozs-neednt have bothered. Nature is a funny thing and he ended up having 4 ozs at most about 11 am. Lunch at 12-1 pm and occasionally a couple more ounzes ebm after his afternoon nap.Otherwise just water. As soon as i got home with him he bfed. Also fed as much as possible on my days off. Good luck and enjoy every minute I expressed once during the day at work and it was all he needed for the next day at 9 months. Wish i hadnt spent so many hours worrying.
Have returned to work wth all 3 children and all were pretty similar.
Am very relaxed about storage due to the natural antibiotic properties in b milk.Always sterilized everything ect. but used milk that had been in freezer 12 months ! Didn`t do my 3 any harm as far as i know.

Tumblemum · 18/08/2006 13:04

Thanks to you all, I think I will stock up as it will make me feel better if I have enough ifyswim less worried that I will not be able to produce enough the day before..

i have to leave her two or three times a week at mo for short periods so using old milk first

it just feels like I am on the epxressing treadmill again, did it for my ds at a much younger age and for shorter periods

hopefully all this milk production may aid weight loss... feel like I am running a small dairy
