should I wake ds in night for a feed?

My ds is 11 days old and night before last he slept from 1am to 7am. I've got used to him waking for feeds and the first I realised was when I woke up and saw the time (had to check he was still alive !). He did it again last night, and though I did wake up this time myself, he was sleeping so soundly I couldn't bring myself to disturb him. Also my nips are a bit sore atm as he's now started feeding almost constantly during the day, so I was pathetically grateful for the break... As he's still so young though, should I really be waking him? Is 6 hours too long?

My ds was the same. He is 19 weeks now but slept right through from about 2 weeks. and from about 6 weeks has slept from 9pm until about 6:30. I have never woken him for a feed, I figure if he is asleep he is happy. At the beinning he fed about every 3-4hrs during the day but now is at least every 4hrs and stays on for about 40 to 50 minutes each time.
Since he was born has been putting on weight as he should be and he is so content. I am a great believer in just going with the flow with your baby, he will tell you when he wants food etc.
Make the most of it! Enjoy the sleep.

unless he is a tiny baby I wouldnt wake him. my eldest slept 12 hours from 10 weeks. 6 hours ids fine..dont worry and enjoy!!

Is he gaining weight well and otherwise happy and healthy? If so I would let him sleep and enjoy the rest.

I'd let him rest - he'll eat when he's hungry. Are you using a cream for the sore nipples - I highly recommend lansinoh (not sure if I've spelt it right) - it was a godsend when I was bf

I wouldn't for 6 hours tbh

dd3 would have slept through 10-7 from about 8 weeks but I used to wake her as I though 9 hours was too long

I've stopped doing it now (she goes from 9pm to 7.30am and is 16 weeks)

I would second lansinoh but also try rubbing a little breastmilk into your nipples. Sounds strange but it soothed mine.

Thanks - he's not very big, only 2.8kg. Also just now had him weighed by midwife; he's only put on 20g in a week... He is pooing and weeing and is a good colour though, alert etc. Am a bit concerned by such slow weight gain as he's feeding SO much in the day. Maybe this changes things and I ought to wake him after all?

I agree with crocodilekate, rubbing breast milk in after feeding and then letting it air a bit helped clear mine up. I found lansinoh irritated mine more. But anything is worth a try cos I know how painful it can be (have been in tears more than once at the beginning from feeding!).

CrocodileKate · 17/08/2006 10:56

He is putting on weight though and not losing it.
I am still in old measures though and have no idea what weight 2.8kg or 20g might be

DD1 b/f every 2 hours day and night, so when DD2 came along I thought she'd be the same. She wasn't though. From the beginning she would wake once or maybe twice at the most at night. When I mentioned this to the midwife when she was 10 days old, she said not to worry and just to get my sleep. DD would make up for it during the day (perhaps what your ds is doing).
