How to switch my 10 month DS to mix feeds? Formula/Cow's Milk? Bottle/cup?

Hello there mumsnetters!

I am exhausted and feel that now is the time to stop bfeeding my 10 months old son. At least during the day anyway! He currently wakes up 1/2 times a night for nursing.

Any ideas on which milk to use? Will only use organic. He drinks water from Tommie Tippee cup so I assume that would be the best method of drinking?

I don't use a steriliser as b/feeding - should I start sterilising or put through dishwasher with everything else?

Also, he is not a big eater and I'm worried that formula will dampen his already small apetite for solids...

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi there
I stopped feeding my DS2 at 10 months,as I needed medication that wasn't compatible.
I found that he liked organic Hipp follow on milk from 10 months.
He hated it in a beaker, so went to a bottle which he still loves at 15 months.

At 10 months through the dishwasher is totally safe.

I hope it goes well for you.
Well done for feeding for this long !
Oh one last thing wean him off gradually, as it's really painful going cold turkey !!
All the best!

Thank you for your help Wisp! I hope to still give him his evening feed so hopefully won't get too much pain!

If you want to try him with his TT cup, i would buy one in a different colour and use that for milk, he will not be prepared for his usual tipple to have morphed into something tasting different.

If you have a large tesco near you they do a trainer bottle that you can use with a wide necked teat but it comes with a soft spout, he may like that as still sucking?

Offer a small amount of formula when he would have normally nursed, this will save wastage and shouldn't dampen his appetite.

I stopped bf my DD at around 10 months. I gave Hipp Organic follow-on milk from her Tommee Tippee First Cup with no problems. It is much easier not to introduce a bottle at this late stage if you can avoid it. No need to sterilise, just make sure you wash the spout thoroughly. Good luck!

Hi Merrily - did you use the ready-made Hipp or powder? Thanks for your advise.

Did you have any trouble getting her to sleep at night with b/feeding?

Naturemum, ds & I cut out his daytime breastfeeds at 10 months, for a few reasons not relevant here, but I was confident enough to give him cow's milk, and not bother with the formula at all. I'm only mentioning this as you have mentioned cm in your title, I am not suggesting it's perfectly good enough, but I know I am giving my son the best possible diet atm and feel that formula is simply (synthetically) fortified cow's milk which has a longer shelf life than I would care to consume, so am happy to try my best to give him all the nutrients possible through his solid diet. Just thought I'd share this with you! Also, I stopped sterilising at 8 months, when it no longer seemed appropriate, IYSWIM!
However he has his milk from a bottle and his water from a cup and has just turned 1, I'm interested in the bottle/cup debate too.
HTH...

I have tried him on a little cows milk and he likes it but following research on the internet was worried about iron absorption etc.

Would prefer to give him straight organic cows milk. Has anyone else gone on to cows milk around 10 months??

Naturemum - I used the powdered Hipp follow-on milk, it's cheaper than ready-made I think. I only used it for a couple of months then went straight onto cow's milk.

I know there are quite a few MNers like Bramblina who have gone straight to cow's milk at around this age. Maybe if you could carry on giving your DS the breastfeed in the evenings for a couple more months, you can go straight to cow's milk during the day? In hindsight, I think that's what I will try and do next time round if I can.

The first evening I didn't breastfeed DD to sleep was a bit tricky, she drank her milk from her cup but then got a bit upset when she realised she wouldn't get a breastfeed as well! I left DH to put her to bed and he calmed her down by walking her up and down for a little while. The next night she was fine. Now DH does the bedtime routine every night which is great!

I use organic cow's milk, it only contains 2% mucous whereas non organic contains around 30%, apparently.
here is a link to a thread I started a while back, read tiktok's info re cows milk. I was worried about the iron levels too, but I make sure ds has liver once a week, followed by kiwi or oranges (you need the vit c to absorb the iron) and I'm quite happy with this. HTH

Obviously he has more food containing iron than just liver, but what I meant was I give him liver as it is so rich in iron IYSWIM.
