To snip tongue tie or not

Hi
My 8 week old has tongue tie. The midwife and hv don't seem concerned as he initially fed ok. He's not feeding amazingly well now but is getting enough and roughly putting on enough weight and latches on ok and I'm not sore. So should I get it cut or not? I don't know if it will help him feed better? He tends to latch on ok but then will fall off at times and often cries out in frustration. He also sometimes can't latch on to begin with and I have to shape and shove my boob at him!

Can take some time for them to relearn a good latch and take enough breast into their mouth.

The LC who snipped DD's showed me an exaggerated latch where you hold the breast like a sandwich which helped.

I think it hurts them a bit, but less than immunisations, don't feel guilty!

Hope feeding improves for you. Still going here at 18 months. Smile

The plot thickens. I went to get wound checked with bf lady and she said its not been done properly. He still has tongue tie.ffs! So got to go back to get it sorted properly....so maybe it will help. When it's done right!!!

I got told no massage, because it isn't clear that it helps, and it is painful for baby and has been known to cause oral aversion in some. It can take a while to see improvement - we are 10 days post snip and we are just getting there!

I wasn't told to massage or anything like that- but DS was only 17 days old when he had it done. It took a little while to notice an improvement with bf- a couple of days maybe- but he made a clicking sound before the snip that stopped straight away. Well worthwhile- OH is Tt and he needed speech therapy when he was little- not really sure if they're connected but the snip is so straight forward (when done correctly!!!!) I don't see much of a downside to doing it while they're still babies.

DS1 went undiagnosed until almost age 6yo. He has had no end of trouble from his ties. His entire orofacial structure has not developed correctly and he's having early orthodontic treatment to correct it. He is a different child now since revision.

I can't say yes or no as to whether you should have it revised, but I would say that you should seek the opinion of somebody knowledgeable about this who looks at the big picture, not just feeding and speech.
