Is feeding this often normal?

My beautiful girl is feeding every hour for 40 minutes she then "rests" / sleeps for 20 minutes and then cries incessantly (which is heart breaking) and then she wants to feed again. Is this normal? It's been like this for the last 5 days. I just want to do what is best and it's heart breaking that she seems so distressed,

How old is she? Could it be a growth spurt?

ClareWeeval · 12/08/2006 21:06

She's 10 days today.

That was how my dd fed for the first few weeks - if it's any consolation it does get better as they get more settled. It's early days; go with what she seems to need.

I remember DS having constant growth spurt around this age and further on obviously. Have you taken her to a breastfeeding group? They are great for reassurance

I spent the first few weeks with DD with a nork out! Just rest, sleep when she does, and let her feed when she wants. The more she feeds, the more you make and the more she can have. It will pass - promise! you are doing a great job so hang on in there.

Oh, and make sure you have a ready supply of chocolate, magazines and other treats to help you survive.

I think DS had a growth spurt at about 10 days, then 4 weeks, then 6 weeks. He fed from about 6/7am until 11pm, then every 2/3 hours until 6/7 and all day again. Literally he didnt stop apart from a few 10/15 minute naps on my lap. Its totally normal and all you can do is get comfy and do it good excuse to watch TV all day Make sure you keep a drink next to you.

BTW DSs growth spurts lasted about 3/4 days, but tailed off rather than switching back to "normal". It feels like its going on for ages, and some drift into eachother.

Are you getting her wind up ok after each feed, or is she dropping to sleep straight away and then waking up screaming?

Make sure she is actually feeding and not sucking for 10 minutes and lying the rest of the time with a nipple in her mouth. She should take small pauses as the milk lets down but she should then restart sucking. It is extremely normal for newborns to feed very frequently, however sometimes it can be a sign that they are not on the breast as well as they should be and therefore it takes longer to feed. Are your nipples OK? If they are also sore, latching could possibly be better. Let her feed as long as she wants on one breast, stroking her back or cheek to stimulate her to suck. When she lets the nipple go, wind her, change her nappy then offer her the other breast. Again let her feed till she lets go. The more she feeds, the more milk you will make. She will start to space her feeds soon - it can take at least 3 weeks to get feeding established so hang in there.

this is completely normal!!!! it seems like hell sometimes (the first 2 - 3 weeks for me were exactly like this) but its just your baby establishing supply. if your nipples hurt then the latch isn't right so see a bf councillor or a mw or hv that has breastfed herself so knows what she is talking about. just ride it out, it will get better - i promise
