How long should I leave my newborn between feeds at night

DS For the past 3 nights has started to sleep for 3-5hrs between feeds. Im obv happy about this as it means I get some rest but im worried in case hes going too long between feeds and maybe I should wake him after 3 hrs.
He was 8lbs 11 born and is now 8lbs 8 at 10 days old. He feeds generally every 2-3hrs during the day.

Thanks

i was told to wake after 3 hours because they get too sleepy to feed sometimes.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 14:48

Lots of questions

  • breast or bottle?
  • jaundice?
  • how well does he feed generally?
  • is he pooing lots?

I'd like to see him back up to his birth weight before you let him sleep more than 3 hours at a go.

My ds lost quite a lot after birth(bad technique on both our parts). M/w said to feed 3 hourly during the day but to let him set the pace at night. His twin (DD) now sleeps thru' and has done since 8 weeks; he still wakes AT LEAST once and is now piling on the ozs - from being 2.5ozs heavier at birth, then 5-6 ozs lighter for 10 weeks (he was a lazy feeder too...WAS) he is now 1lb 6 ozs heavier!!!
But I agree with NotQuiteCockney - so much depends...

kbaby · 12/08/2006 15:53

Im breast feeding.
Wsa jaundiced, only slighty visable in the eyes and has now cleared
He feeds for 10 minutes on one breast only and during the day feeds between every hr to 3 hrs if hes in the car seat or buggy. Cluster feeds in the evenings.
Poos after most feeds yellow mustard colour. infact hes a pooing machine

So does DTS - just like yours, and DTs are now almost 15 weeks old! (But better him than DTD who only poos once a fortnight, then, boy, does she fill her nappy!)
I'd say make sure he feeds at least every 3 hours during the day. Was he early (hopefully not at that weight!)? My m/w is convinced feeding & weight gain take off once you hit your due date. Mine sure did!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/08/2006 16:19

I always let my two set the pace in the night. I've never believed in waking a baby unless I was concerned for their health or similar.

My two always gained weight well and fed well during the day so it wasnt an issue for me.

If all general circs are normal I would say leave him.

Mum2FunkyDude · 12/08/2006 16:21

Try dreamfeeding, don't have to wake baby for that.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 16:34

Hmm, once he's gaining weight for sure, I'd say leave him sleep longer than three hours. But you want to be sure he's gaining properly.

laundrylover · 12/08/2006 18:54

kbaby, i'm not a fan of waking babies at night for obvious reasons! i would say to offer the other side during day feeds if you are worried about him not getting enough but he sounds a good weight to me! reckon you're doing well - let us know if he has gained when next weighed.

kbaby · 13/08/2006 08:58

Thanks, Ill get the mw to weigh him tomorrow.
Last night he fed at 12pm then 4am and then 8am. Both am feeds I had to wake him for and after 4hrs you'd think hed be hungry but he wasnt really interested and only fed for 3 mins and didnt seem bothered.

Ill have to speak to my mw as I am quite worried. Ill have to see if he feeds ok today.

i would feed your baby on demand night and day, although during the day wake your baby every 3 hours to feed if he doesn't wake for a feed himself. if he sleeps at night for a longer time, thats fine, just be ready to feed him as soon as he does wake.

my ds fed for 5 minutes only, 10 minutes very rarely, every 3 hours since he was about 2 weeks told. he went between 4 - 7 hours without a feed at night. he stayed on the 75th weight percentile through out, and still is on this percentil now at 18 months. his height went from 75th to 99.6th percentile.

you should not need your baby weighed to see how healthy they are, since the charts are based on about 12 american formula fed babies in the 1960s. as long as you feed every single time your baby asks and as long as there are plenty of wet nappys and the odd dirty one, and your baby is alert and healthy looking you are doing fine!

littlepiggie · 13/08/2006 19:52

I was told feed ds every 2-3 hours in the day and let him sleep at night as he was a good weight(8.5). I agree about the charts, you are better going on nappies, those charts had me in a panic when ds only put on 4oz in nearly 2 weeks. He would more than likely wake on his own not long after anyway, and there is only so much a baby can eat in 24 hours.

laundrylover · 13/08/2006 22:22

Altho I agree about not waking at night and about not getting hooked on the growth charts, I would say that for Kbaby with a 12 day old baby it is reassuring for the MW to weigh your baby just to set your mind at rest. Wet nappies and a happy baby are the best signs but I know from my own experiences that a few ounces gained in those early weeks really lets you know that you're doing it right! If I remember rightly they don't even plot on the chart at that age.
My first fed lots and didn't sleep well but this new one feeds very quickly (3-5 mins is normal) and not so often and can go 12 hours on occasion at 18 weeks. Reckon your DS is just a great baby Kbaby so enjoy your sleep - it might not last!!!!

Frizbe · 13/08/2006 22:36

12 hrs LL you can grow to dislike some people you know!

mears · 13/08/2006 22:45

kbaby - as long as he is feeing well during the day, peeing and pooing I certainly would not waken him at night. He will undoubtedly wake for a feed when he is ready. Enjoy the rest at night because it may well not last for long

cece · 13/08/2006 22:56

If he wakes feed, if he doesn't wake don't wake him to feed!

laundrylover · 13/08/2006 23:05

Hey Friz it's not a regular occurence you know - just and occasional treat!!!

kbaby · 14/08/2006 10:54

thanks everyone. my first used to wake every 1.5hrs day and night and was never really a sleeper. ds sleeping at night is all new to me.

ill carry on as we are then as he is happy and alert.
