Green Pooh - FF should I change milk?

Hi,

DD3 - 14wks, Fully FF for the last 10 days or so.

Has very green nappies (like a military or olive green), which smells pretty foul. Has been the case since she was on about 50/50 BF/FF - so I think it is the milk. Should I change her milk (Currently on C&G) or will all formulas do the same?

I think green poos are common aren't they? (it was over 3 yrs ago i had a young baby though!).

My dd was fully bf and i'm sure i remember a varied colour of poos, olive green defo being one of them! .

I read that they can be variable in BF, but should be more consistent in FF. I don't remember DTDs being like this (on SMA Gold).

Er No

2plus2plus1 · 02/08/2006 15:11

No to what MrsD? All formulas doing the same? Changing milk?

DS was totally FF and green poo was common. He was on Enfamil milk. All FF brands pretty similar, shouldn't think changing brands would do that much and the advice is once you've chosen one to stick to it. I'd ring your HV if you're worried but it doesn't sound unusual to me colourwise. FF poo also does smell more than BF poo.

liquidclocks · 02/08/2006 15:21

Afterthought - has poo got mucus in it at all?

wools · 02/08/2006 15:24

It does sound like the formula could be causing it. I seem to remember this happening with ds2 as well. Are the stools soft? I switched from Cow and Gate to Aptamil First and this caused very smelly urine which hv said was caused by switch in formulas. I must say, with ds1 I used SMA gold and never had this problem but sma made ds2 constipated. It might be worth trying some ready-made to save you buying a whole tin of different formula

No mucus. And I don't actually have a HV at the mo. I have an 'emergency number' if I need help but as I think it is the milk I am not too worried about it. I just wondered if it was worth trying a different brand as it is particularly unpleasant.

I had noticed that urine seemed a little smelly too. Had also wondered whether that was the formula.

Good that there's no mucus. That + smelly poo = trip to doctors, not ideal! We used Farleys before the enfamil and don't really remember any problems with it. As long as DD seems ok in herself I'd try not to concern yourself too much. Smelly wee IME usually comes from it being quite concentrated - is she drinking enough?

2plus2, just wanted to let you know that our DD is FFed and is perfectly healthy in all respects, and her poos are an astonishing range of greens!! Just think dulux paint range, and that should give you an idea! She is on SMA Gold. I was told to expect it, so it wasn't a shock, but some have been nearly fluorescent, and the smell is sometimes really horrible. (How can sometyhing so small and cute produce such a big, revolting stench?!!) Unless there are other things you are concerned about, I wouldn't worry about it - as long as she is pooing and weeing she should be fine.

Thanks,

I knew they would be different to BF nappies, but they were different to my previous recollections of FF nappies. I am not concerned about her - just wondered whether changing formula would make things more pleasent for me (I don't like the colour - Dulux Apple basket green pretty close, similar to bathroom wall!!!).

Hey, at least if there are any "accidents" the poo won't leave marks on the bathroom walls!

QueenPeaHead · 02/08/2006 19:20

all formulas aren't the same, different formulas have different effects on babies- why don't you try and change it?
Example - my 5 month old was on C&G organic - perfectly settled on it but not sleeping through. went to greece for 3 weeks and put her on Almiron (C&G sister brand) - perfectly settled and sleeping through. Thought it was getting older and nice temp etc. Came back to england with leftover Almiron - happy and sleeping through. When it ran out put her back on C&G organic - waking up starving at night again!!!!!
Amazing.
Think I'm going to put her on SMA to see if it satisfies her more (Aptamil makes her sicky).

I think I will try changing. Can't hurt can it?
