well Orlaith had her 1st jabs last tuesday and she was bit unsettled but nothing major. over weekend she got worse again and hardly slept all night and was only feeding for 5 mins. i have cut out dairy from my diet and she stopped needing gaviscon. just got her weighed today and shes lost 3 oz in weight in just under a week. do i just keep feeding more often, its every hr as it is? do i need to eat more calories etc. i am stumped. we go on holiday on saturday and now i'm not looking forward to it at all incase shes ill

How long does she feed for when she's on?

Is she any more settled now?

lovelymamma · 02/08/2006 15:34

she goes on for between 5 and 10 mins sometimes longer. i hear her gulping etc, shes all smiley but an hr later shes screaming again, sometimes its not even the hr. i just fed her from both sides and shes asleep now, but my left side has very poor milk supply as i lost it when i got thrush and it was too sore to feed from.

Lovely, you need to speak to someone about this. Your baby must be about 2 months, and it's not usual for a baby to lose any weight without being poorly.

What does your HV say?
Your own diet won't make any diff. to your baby's milk intake, quality or quantity.

I don't want to comment, really, as I think you are right to be concerned. Babies' weights sometimes do fluctuate, and minor illness can have the effect of a weight loss, but you should still speak to someone.

Are you sure about the weight, BTW? Done on top quality scales? Baby naked? Translation from metric to imperial accurate??

RE the weight issue, it sounds like she might not be getting enough of the thicker hind milk, because she's not sucking for long enough, persuading her to keep sucking might help, and then she might also last a bit longer between feeds.

Some people suggest tickling feet, but I always put dd1 down for a couple of mins, and then put her back on, she used to carry on a bit longer that way.

When did you give up dairy? It can take a long time for your milk to be completely free of the proteins, and tthe auto-immune response generated by the vaccines might have upset her system more than it would an allergy free child.

Just a thought...I gave up dairy, and saw a huge difference, reflux almost gone, no gaviscon etc, but she still wasn't right, gave up eggs as well and she became almost calm

It sounds hard, but you need to relax as much as possible as stressing out will not help.
it is a myth that you need to eat extra to produce milk, but if you are keeping yourself well your body will find it easier to produce good milk.

If possible spend a day or two in bed with baby, resting and feeding as much as you like.

baby was naked, scales are usual ones she uses but i went to a diff clinic so different table etc. she weighed er in kilos then checked it on a chart
gave up dairy 2 weeks ago now and things have progressively got better, this is recent since weekend really. someone said growth spurt maybe but as i have 2 other kiddies i'm not resting enough and not feeding her often enough to keep up????
i'm stumped, have phoned gp and waitin for a call back

Babies don't lose weight in a growth spurt....without any other symptoms of illness or being off colour, lovely, then I would be fairly sure everything is ok.

I would definitely check the translation from metric to imperial.

What was she in kg?

Not resting won't make any diff.

Of course, not feeding her would make a diff (!) but unless she is very placid (and actually some babies are) she won't 'let' you ignore her to the extent of losing weight. The hindmilk thing is not normally an issue unless you are delib. taking her off too soon.

No harm in making sure you fit in extra feeds when you can, if the doc gives you the all clear,of course.

she is 4.86 now but was 4.96 last thursday. dr rang back and doesnt seem worried. she said that as shes generally happy and we are getting plenty of wet nappies and her lst nappy was back to yellow then wot ever it was may have passed.
shes now been asleep 2 hrs which is the longest for days so maybe dr is right.
she said that if no improvement by tmw luchtime then ring for a drop in appointment for afternoon but shes sure everythin is ok now.

def. check the conversion. when my baby was born they converted incorrectly, told me she was 8lb 5, was actually 8lb 14oz, only realised when hv came to do next weigh in and noticed the error on my notes. livid after paying £££££ for birth announcements.
