Lactose intolerance is very rare in babies. Having problems with the proteins in cows milk (CMPA) is far more common.

What makes you worry about it?

MummyWolf79 · 02/02/2014 04:10

HV has suggested an intolerance, been using colief which helps a little but hes still in some discomfort. She mentioned that lactose free formula was now available over the counter but told me to be careful about too much oestrogen......

I think the Hv means soya formula. How on earth can you be 'careful' about too much oestrogen ? As if you are going to give oestrogen in some other additional way? (There are oestrogen in soya formula which is why it should only even be used if it has to be and that would only be after a proper diagnosis of allergy or severe intolerance to normal formula ).

She is right that soya is not generally recommended for boys under 5. You need to see your gp urgently for a dietician referral to try and get to the bottom of it. There are lactose free milks such as neocate but it can sometimes be a long journey to get it prescribed.

Fishandjam · 02/02/2014 09:16

I think you need to get a proper diagnosis. HVs can suggest all kinds of things without actually having any idea what is truly wrong. See your GP?

Lactose intolerance is generally quite rare, I think...

My baby is CMPA and has secondary lactose intolerance. Apparently according to my paediatrician lactose intolerance does happen in baby's but it tends to be as a result of a CMPA.

Go to your gp and ask for a weeks supply of allergy milk and a referral to your paediatrics department. If it is a problem with the milk after a week you should see an improvement.

What are you dcs poos like?

cupcake78 · 02/02/2014 09:24

Don't bother with soya formula or comfort formula. If your baby is CMPI then soya is likely to be a problem as well and comfort formula isn't adjusted enough to make a difference.

MummyWolf79 · 02/02/2014 11:37

Thanks all, planned to see the GP about it this week. Poos are normal yellowish and seedy. Think HV suggested intolerance as all colic remedies havent worked and hes still in alot of discomfort, especially after a bottle, he sounds like a cars gears crunching whilst drawing his legs up. He takes about 20 mins to settle at night after feeding which is bonkers as before all this he went straight back to sleep. We've had a couple of projectile vomits and he retches sometimes too. So confusing!! We thought it might have been the formula he was on so changed it a couple of weeks ago (Aptamil to SMA) He was fine on both for ages, then all of a sudden changed and became really unhappy.

Could it be reflux? I have no experience but your hv seems to have suggested so etching without any evidence really. Do you wind him? Drawing their legs up could mean he's got some trapped wind. Does he poo regularly?

QuietNinjaTardis · 02/02/2014 11:41

Suggested something! Sorry stupid iPad.

MummyWolf79 · 02/02/2014 12:31

Poos like clockwork, I wind like theres no tomorrow!! Over the shoulder, upright on my knee and laid on my knee - he seems to struggle with trumping more tham anything, you can see the relief on his face when he farts sometimes....
