One week old feeding just 5 minutes?

Hi,

My ds is 9 days old and this is my first baby. I'm bf and he seems to have a good latch and be a contented little thing. He had gained weight at the 5 day weigh but havent had him weighed again since.

My question is whether its normal for him to only feed for five minutes or so and only from one breast each feed? He feeds around every two hours and wakes up rooting. I let him feed til he stops gulping completely and usually falls asleep and falls off. He's then totally out of it and not interested in the other side.

He's producing 4-5 soft yellow nappies a day and probably 5-8 wet ones.

Anyone shed some light... or reassurance all is well? TIA

Sounds fine to me.

You'll be amazed how much a baby can take in a 5 minute feed. As long as he is weeing/pooing/ then I'm sure all is well.

Maybe go get him weighed just to set your mind at rest.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/01/2014 22:26

As long as he's making around 5 poos a day (with each poo at least as big as a £2 coin), then he's absolutely fine.

Sounds fine to me like you've got a good efficient feeder. As above says the next weighing should put your mind at rest. Well done for the 5 day weight gain not loss. Did you puff your chest out and say "I did that with my milk" I know I did with mine.

Sounds perfect but be warned it changes daily at this stage in my experience. I found that joining bf groups really helped to give you the best ideas on what was normal.

My DS fed like that. Some midwives -/ HVs tried to worry me that wasn't enough but it's all he wanted. His nappies were good, like yours, and he gained weight.

You're doing great! Each baby is different and not all need those mammoth 45 minutes on each boob I was always hearing about!

Thanks this is really helpful. I was rapidly losing my nerve as everything i've read seems to suggest i should be pinned to the settee all day with him!

I think I should try and track down my health visitor as i've not heard anything about the next appointment, i definitely think another weigh in will help me to chill out about it all.

Mine was and is a very quick feeder, 5-7 mins max, amazing for those night feeds Wink I was told to buy box sets of DVDs to get me through night feeding, so glad I didn't bother!

SingSongSlummy · 29/01/2014 22:51

You sound like you're doing just fine! My first baby fed for ages at each feed (and I really needed those box sets!) But my second babywas done and dusted in 5-7 mins each time. I was really worried about it at first, but that was just how she fed. Fingers crossed you have a speedy feeder which will save you hours of time in the next few months!

RockCrushesLizard · 29/01/2014 22:51

Just wanted to echo the advice here. Go by nappies, not time at the breast - that's hugely variable. (at this stage, you want at least 2/3 poos, six wet)
A baby that gained by day 5 is one who knows how to eat!
Well done you and babe Grin

My Ds is 10 months now and he did this, I was worried as my other ds would have fed for 30/40 mins but he was obviously getting enough, the only thing I noticed was his poo started to go green and after a quick google, I started to only swap sides after every second feed and his nappies went back to yellow.

Scotinoz · 30/01/2014 01:55

Mine did the five minute feeding thing at that age too. I kept reading that she should be feeding for 20 minutes plus and totally panicking.

Turns out she's just efficient! She's eight weeks now and still feeds pretty quickly most if the time - glups it down like its the last meal on earth - but definitely takes her a but longer now.

It's taken me eight weeks but I'm slowly learning that contented babies pretty much means they're getting enough to eat and putting on weight. Although I do still weigh her on the bathroom scales sometimes...

Just to say thanks again. We had a good night and i'm feeling much more confident about things from reading your experiences!
