aaaagh breastfeeding - why has it all gone up the spout?

dd is six weeks and breastfed.

i was thinking i'd let her fall into her own routine and this seemed to be happening, feeding around every 3 hours in the day and 4 in the night. all good i thought. until a week ago when it all changed, she has become really unsettled and seems to be finding it hard to take a feed all in one go. so she'll feed for say 10 minutes then come off and then despite obviously being hungry she doesn't seem able to feed (don't think it's wind as she burps in between). i'll try and settle her or leave her for a bit but she'll then get really overtired which makes the feeding even more difficult. this goes on and on until she'll finally feed again (but in the process will not have slept for all the fussing so will be in a right old state). come the evening she's really overtired and so we have more of the same only worse.

i'd be inclined to go with the flow but for the fact that 21mo ds will be finishing at the childminder to be with me full time at the end of next week and i don't know how i'll manage with this problem (that requires almost constant attention) and a toddler.

any ideas? tia

sorry can't help but am bumping for you

6 weeks is the dreaded growth spurt/feeding up spout time. If you work through it and go with the flow it settles again fairly quickly.

Don't if this will help, but two theories

1- she gets hot and maybe a bit bothered being close to you - take all her close off when feeding.
2- she is too tired to increase your milk production (it's hard work), so you could pump just after she stops feeding. After a couple of days this should increase your milk flow and she will find it easier to feed.

or 3, would a dummy help to settle her in between feeds? PLEASE don't shoot me because I've said dummy...

mimix - I gave DS1 a dummy at 6 wks, because he was wanting to breastfeed constantly, then puking it all up.

IT WAS THE BEST THING I EVER DID!!!

IMO 6 wks is the worst time, then 7 wks come and it all seems to get better again, so hang in there!

Sorry - I was called away, so the quick reply. DS gets very unsettled with growth spurts and wants to feed lots, but is too frustrated to do it properly, hence all the fussing here.

We had some nights from hell around this time - we couldn't tell if he was windy, hungry, or just plain grumpy. It was a hard few days/week, but then it all started to settle again.
