2 day old sick two hours after every feed

DD2 is just two days old and my milk hasn't come in yet. Feeding seems to be going ok, although latch isn't great yet and the midwife did say she has a slight PTT.

My main concern though is that she has been sick after every feed so every hour or two. It seems worse if she's laying down. Now, this could be totally normal and I've forgotten but I'm sure DD1 didn't do this.

Sorry if this is all a bit garbled but sleep deprivation will do that Smile.

Any advice or experience would be gratefully received.

Congratulations on your new arrival Thanks

Did the mw suggest getting the tt looked at? Is there a lactation consultant that specialises in tt in your area?

Not sure on the vomit but hopefully someone will be along soon.Smile

She said it should be ok so we're getting a second opinion today. I think I'd prefer it dealt with judging on the research I've done.

It's the unknown nature of the vomiting that's worrying me. And here I was thinking I'd worry less with no2.

Some babies are sick a lot. One of mine was sick after every feed. The other was virtually never sick.

Is your dd getting plenty of wet nappies? If she is, then milk is getting through her system. In the medium term, keep getting her weighed to make sure she is putting on weight, although this is not going to help much at two days old.

Definitely mention it to your midwife, if only to put your mind at rest.

One more thing, are you winding her thoroughly?

And congratulations Smile

MrsHowardRoark · 27/01/2014 08:39

I'm kind of winding her. I never had to with DD1 so I'm a bit rusty. I sit her up and rub her back for 10 minutes or so or until she burps.

DD was a very sicky baby - reflux was eventually diagnosed Sad

Keep going back about this till it's sorted. Our HV kept telling me DD'd grow out of it, she didn't. A video (on your phone?) of what's happening is helpful to show HCP's what's happening. Domperidone was the wonder potion for us.

I fed DD and kept her upright (eg on my shoulder) and made sure all wind was up for about 20 mins after each feed. We tilted the Moses basket so the head end was slightly raised too. HTH and much sympathy Smile

dd was very sicky up until she was sitting at 5 months.

It wasnt reflux just a sicky baby it never seemed to bother her. Keeping your baby upright does help with lots of winding.

Maybe your midwife can help.

Get that tongue tie snipped sooner rather than later. If you can't get it done nhs then go private. Don't listen to any hcp who tells you a tt is 'minor'. Get it snipped ASAP or it will come back to haunt you. And be sure to have follow up in case of reattach ment etc as sometimes they need resnipped a few times. Get in touch with milkmatters.org. Good luck and congrats on your new arrival!

nirishma, not all tongue ties affect feeding.

Tongue ties need to be assessed by someone who knows what they are looking for, and who knows if treatment can help. It's not right to say she must get it fixed as soon as possible - this baby might be just fine :)

OP - the best thing to do is what you are already doing, ie ask the people who are caring for you about your baby being sick, and you're quite right to get a second opinion.

Hope you get some good reasssurance.

MrsHowardRoark · 27/01/2014 15:40

I've seen another midwife and she says there is no tongue tie Confused. Hardly reassuring.

She thinks the vomiting may be due to her fast delivery. There was no time for the mucus in the stomach and airways to be squeezed out in the birth canal. I guess it's a waiting game.

Thank you all for your comments, it's comforting just having out there iyswim.
