I was hoping someone would be able to share some views on my DS feeding as I'm starting to have some doubts on whether I'm doing the right thing...
DS is 20 weeks and weighs 12llb 6oz (he was 5 weeks prem) he has always had a good appetite and easily does 3-4oz per feed (FF). He goes 3-4 hours through the night but in the day he guzzles 4oz and after 2 hours wants more. My sister suggested hungry milk so he goes longer as at 5 months shouldn't be feeding this regularly?? He does a lot of the time do sicky burps (digested milk not posseting).
What do you think? Should I try hungry milk or is it ok for him to feed this often?
I have slowly slowly started trying him on rusks/baby rice which he has taken to great...

Shouldn't he have more milk at each feed.?

I believe the advice is to fees on demand whether you are formula feeding or breastfeeding.

As far as I am aware hungry babymilk just has something added to make it harder to digest and sit in the stomach for longer. It is no more nutrient or calorie dense than standard milk.

Sounds like you could add an ounce to his feeds first, to see if he takes that.

I have tried a few times giving 5oz but not interested....I don't mind giving him feeds on demand every 2 hours, but just started to doubt myself, as he was feeding every 2 hours when newborn thought as he got older and the milk increased he would go longer which was happening at night but not in the day. Think I will stick to normal milk and maybe encourage the extra oz.....

I would try him with an extra ounce or two at first. DS was taking about 5/6 oz at that age. Only moved on to hungry baby milk once he was on solid food and taking 8oz per feed.

My DD is just over 4months and weighs about 13lbs. I offer her 6oz every feed, sometimes she'll guzzle the lot but other times she'll only want 3oz. Babies are like us, they don't nesseccarily want the same amount to eat at every meal. Have you tried offering a bit more for a whole day?

thrifttwig · 27/01/2014 20:49

Tala86....
I did whole day offering 5oz and yes you are right 2 feeds he took 3 he didnt.
Thanks for all the advice you all have reassured me to continue what I'm doing!

Babies appetite will go up and down. Growth spurts etc.

Hungry baby milk is just made extra stodgy so baby's stomach has to work even harder to digest it. It keeps baby from wanting more milk because it's just sitting there in their stomach keeping them full.

If baby needs more milk more often to grow, keeping them full with that stuff is counter productive.

This stuff does my head in with formula - hungry baby, stage 2/3 etc.

None of it is needed, just the stage one is perfectly good until weaning off formula.

can I poke my nose in to add that please be careful with rusks- I think most have sugar in which really isn't great for someone as small as a baby, for either their bodies or their teeth.
IMO sugar should be banned for baby products, and I imagine it might well be in the future.
If you've successfully introduced some solids to your LO please check packaging etc and stick to stuff free from added sugar and artificial sweeteners. Sorry for adding opinion which wasn't asked for, but I was reading about this on NHS website yesterday.
