Breastfeeding in a sling

littlemslazybones · 24/01/2014 13:37

I have a new baby and I'm trying to get the hang of breastfeeding with a stretchy wrap in the cradle hold and finding it impossible. How are you meant to sling the baby high, for safety, whilst maintaining any nipple-mouth interface when you have norks pushing an f cup? And even if that were possible how on earth is this the discrete breastfeeding that I was hoping to make for a fuss free school run?

Any ideas? I must be doing something wrong but can't find any useful- websites to help.

Thanks

Hi, watching! I managed to feed my DD in our Caboo carrier once, but it must have been a fluke because I've never managed to repeat it! Hopefully someone on here will be able to help.

You need to sling baby low whilst feeding and then hoick back up again

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/01/2014 14:59

It is maybe easier as baby grows? I sling feed but not til oh about maybe couple months at least. helps also to have big saggy boobs ime. youtube has vids to demonstrate, tho.

I haven't achieved this myself, but my best mate did it in an Ergo carrier, so baby was in an upright position. She just wore the carrier very low. Having said that, she is about a B cup normally, I was an E cup so feel your pain.

CMOTDibbler · 24/01/2014 15:08

You sling low when feeding - I was an f cup when feeding and fed a lot in a ring sling

FrumiousBandersnatch · 24/01/2014 15:15

Yes, you drop baby lower to feed but you must then hoick them back up once they've finished so that they are safely high up again ('close enough to kiss').

I concur with all the advice above. I didn't manage to breast feed in a stretcy in the cradle hold. I kept him upright but loosened the sling so I could jiggle him down enough. I would also move my boob up towards him. I don't want to think what this says about the perkiness of my boobs! It also got a lot easier after DS was a bit bigger, eg after 12 weeks.

Woodifer · 24/01/2014 18:28

I breastfeeding in ergo. Neither of mine got on with slings that fold there feet up towards their heads iyswim?

Anyway started from nearly birth, with newborn insert with DS.

Thanks for all your help. I need to get the hang of slinging him lower, it all feels a bit odd at the moment, as though he is less secure. I think I'm going to just have to keep practising. At the very least, you have at least saved me from my futile attempt to hoist my boobs to gravity defying heights!

basically you need the sling low enough that it feels too low - and possibly too loose as well, I found it easier in a woven.

WeekendsAreHappyDays · 25/01/2014 13:07

have you got a local sling meet, breast feeding group, gentle/attachment/natural parenting group - it is easier if someone shows you

Sparklyboots · 25/01/2014 13:20

My norks are f cup and I manage in my ssc and my woven; we used to manage in the Moby but are too big for stretchies now. Basically, I have the baby slung lower, and I support the boob with a hand inside (same hand as boob, pushing up from under). I always readjust position afterwards as while the baby is fine, it's tough on your back to have them low. I've never done it in a cradle position, just normal front to front carry. Essential skill for bfing while.doing toddler care!

littlemslazybones · 25/01/2014 13:21

No, I don't think we have anything like that here. Tbh, even if we did, I'd struggle to get to it. I'm still trying to find my feet with looking after a newborn and my other children.

If it comes to it I'll just knock this idea of slinging and feeding on the head until he's a bit bigger.

i used to just loosen and drop baby sideways rather than try to position from start

WeekendsAreHappyDays · 25/01/2014 13:24

you will get the hang of it

littlemslazybones · 25/01/2014 13:29

Thanks. I've got a few things to try out now, so hopefully I'll find a way to make it work.
