Is this officially backed? Does anhone know what sort of advice is beeing given and who is giving it?

The advice on their websire leaves a lot to be desired so if theyre giving this advice face to face to actual women who are struggling (and standing at the end of the bottle aisle) id be worried.
"Youll know if your baby is getting enough milk as theyll put on weight in the first two weeks"
"After a few weeks start expressing"

ChutesTooNarrow · 24/01/2014 09:41

Well yes, there's no money in breast feeding mothers is there? At least if they get them expressing they can sell bottles Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 10:17

Exactly my concern.

K8Middleton · 24/01/2014 12:14

What?

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 12:16

Cant see an ad on their site.
k8 the ad is somethjng like "visit our asda pharmacy for advice on infant feeding"

OP posts:
K8Middleton · 24/01/2014 12:21

Oh, so presumably with a qualified pharmacist?

I'd be interested to know what qualification that have to give advice.

nearlyreadytopop · 24/01/2014 12:26

tesco are as well. I had an invite to discuss breastfeeding with an expert. This 'bf expert' is a dietician. Considering the dietitian advice I've had in the past regarding breastfeeding its v scary that tesco are using one for bf.Sad

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 12:44

Hmm. Not good. Ive raised this so will see what comes of it.

OP posts:
K8Middleton · 24/01/2014 12:59

Have you contacted NCT, LLL and ABM?

ABM are v active on Twitter (Emma Pickett @makesmilk) and NCT are usually pretty good to get onto this sort of thing if you get the right person. I'd just go straight to [email protected] - no point fannying about Grin

Then they can investigate and take up the baton if needed.

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 13:05

Ive gone down a slightly diffrrent path but will let yoy know how I get on

K8Middleton · 24/01/2014 13:05

Good luck :)

tiktok · 24/01/2014 13:11

Link?

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 13:17

Tiktok it's a radio ad so no link. Asda we site gives breastfeeding advice but no mention that I can see of this individual advice on a consultation basisi

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 13:19

Although I domt think much of their generic advice on the site. "Until baby is around 1 year old, contjnue to give your baby 500-600ml of breast milk every day".
My markings must have rubbed off in the shower.

Whereas NHS CHoices say:
Every baby is an individual, but there are three clear signs which, together, show your baby is ready for solid foods alongside breastmilk or infant formula. It is very rare for these signs to appear together before your baby is six months old.

1.They can stay in a sitting position and hold their head steady.
2.They can co-ordinate their eyes, hands and mouth so that they can look at the food, pick it up and put it in their mouth, all by themselves.
3.They can swallow food. Babies who are not ready will push their food back out, so they get more round their face than they do in their mouths.
Some signs that can be mistaken for a baby being ready for solid foods:

•chewing fists
•waking in the night when they have previously slept through
•wanting extra milk feeds
These are normal behaviours and not necessarily a sign of hunger, or a sign of being ready to start solid food. Starting solid foods won’t make them any more likely to sleep through the night. Extra feeds are usually enough until they’re ready for other food.

Much better IMO :)

The quantity advice on breastmilk is just stupid - what sort of guidance is that? It makes them sound, oh, I dunno....a bit uninformed about it all?

Perhaps someone should ask them, as a worried mum, how anyone can know if a baby is having the right amount of breastmilk?

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 13:46

Exactly. And thats just the generic advice on their site -see further down thread for "youll know if your newborn is getting enough milk as theyll be putting on weight" and "after a few weeks start to express". Imagine what theyll say when they have a harrassed new mum who's struggling to feed standing in front of them with her credit card.

tiktok · 24/01/2014 13:47

The writers of this stuff are Triad Retail Media. They write the Asda Baby Club stuff here:

babyclub.asda.com/Nutrition-for-mum-and-little-one

Happily, they add:

"Neither Triad Retail Media UK Limited nor its publisher make any representations as to the accuracy or efficacy of the information provided"

So it doesn't have to be accurate or efficacious.

Phew.

However, you'd think Asda might care about that side of things.

StealthPolarBear · 24/01/2014 13:48

Oh well thats ok then. Im sure when you're jiggling your screaming baby on your knee, your first thought is to read the small print.
ill let you know how I get on!

OP posts:
tiktok · 24/01/2014 13:52

On the site I linked to, they give their source of info as the Ready Steady Baby site from NHS Scotland. This is a very good source of info - but the Asda info does not reflect it in any way.

For example, new mothers are advised by Asda to increase their vitamin C intake. Why? There is nothing on the RSB/NHS Scotland site to suggest that, as far as I can see.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 24/01/2014 13:52

One might wonder wtf the point is of information that might well be inaccurate or useless. Frightening.

Maybe if Asda started stocking a George nursing range they might be more interested in real bf support. If you nipped in to chat to a bfc and came out with a couple of bf vests, a box of breast pads and a tube of Lansinoh, it would be win-win.
