very hungry 3 month old!

My dd has always been a hungry baby - nearly always having more than the guidelines on the formula box. Now at 3 months seems to need 210 - 240 per feed ( usually 5 feeds a day). was wondering whther to keep giving this amount or change to "hungry baby" formula as a bit worried that the amount she is having is too much for her little tummy. if she had hungry baby then presumably she's be satisfied by having less. Any opinions/ experiences with this anyone?

I think you should give her a mashed up sausage roll

mine was a very hungry baby as she used to have 9 bottles a day of 7oz!.. till i changed from GOLD Sma to White SMA and she was alot happier and started to sleep through the night and i always feed her when she wants it and not by the guidelines (feed every 4 hours!). my DD would let me know that she had enough.

i changed my formulas when dd was 8 weeks old as she was old enough by then.

My ds was the same, he was drinking 6 8 - 9oz bottles a day. We tried him on hungry baby formula and it made him really sick so we went back to ordinary. I honestly wouldn't worry about how much she's having. Babies will drink what they need. If she's content between feeds and isn't too sicky or excessively windy then just let her get on with it.

squashymate · 31/07/2006 09:56

welshboris - that was an unkind message from someone who had a serious question to ask, what is it with mumsnet these days, can't people ask normal questions anymore?????

This is the formula I used to use to work out DD's formula requirements. First off, forget the recommended amount that's on the tin. That's worked out for average weight for age babies and my daughter was a big baby at birth and continued at the 98th percentile for height and weight for a year.
This formula is more accurate. (It's in kgs and mls - sorry) Weight of child x 150ml divided by number of feeds (5/6). That puts your dd at about 6.5kgs x 150 = ± 975ml. She seems to be taking about that or a bit more. If she seems happy on that I would stick to what you are doing. Just bear in mind that it's not recommended that they have much more than a litre of milk in 24 hours. If you're having to push her up to even more than she's on now, I would consider changing her to a 'hungry baby formula'. DD was on one and it did make a difference. Try and stick to the 'hunry' version of the formula you're already on, so any rejection/ bringing up less likely. Also phase it in half/half for a few bottles.

As with Jambots formula here is the other version.

Weight of baby in lbs * 2-3ozs = guide ozs over 24 hrs then divided by number of feeds.

This formula gives you a high and low figure, depending on baby's appetite.

so:

14.5 * 2 = 29 / 5 = 6oz
14.5 * 3 = 43.5ozs / 5 = 8-9oz

So a baby would consume between 6-9 ozs a feed.

So your DD is on track.
