I know I've posted about this before. last night dd was basically awake with wind from 10pm until 5am. I@, pretty sure it is wind as her lehs & arms are flailing around & she is squealing & squaking & making teh odd realyy painful cry. No burping posiition seems to work, nor has infacol made that much difference. even picking her up didn;t provide much relief. has anyone any ideas what else i could try/ i can't bear seeing her in pai or so knackered in teh day..

What happens when you simpy feed her and keep her close to you when she's asleep, BB....have you thought about co-sleeping? Maybe the distress is not pain or wind, but simply an expression that she hates being on her own?

Mojomummy · 30/07/2006 16:20

Hi, how was the birth ? my friend had a similar situation with her BF DD. Now resolved after 3 cranial osteopath visits & wheat & caffeine free diet. She says it's like having a different baby ! HTH

bodenbetty · 30/07/2006 18:46

HI again. tiktok I'm fairly convinced its wind becasue of teh grunting sounds - I know we ahve had teh discussion about co-sleeping before & its really not for me. she will sometimes go to slepp on me but is still thrashing about even then. has currently been asleep in her bouncy chair since 4.30 as happy as can be - but won't do this at night!
mojomummy i had a section as she was breech/oblique 7 also I haad some issues about vaginal birth. I odn't drink caffeine & have even given up chocolatewhich is killing me - so wheat is teh next thing to go I guess - how much fun am I going to be to live with!!

Hello bodenbetty

Blimey i know this one well!
TBH i did this with all 4 of mine when they were first born....windy babies giving me sleep!

This is my theory on why babies sleep so well in car seats - Gravity!!

A folded tea-towel under the cot mattress (babys head/chest area) to cause a slight tilt/slant in the laying position. Also, i use to roll hand towels to form a tight sausage shape and mould into a circle and place baby in the middle of it, again mattress raised slightly (so they dont slide down the bottom of the cot)
All i can say is, I was desperate for sleep and this helped....(made sure no smothering could occur too) So always bear that in mind if trying my method! For more detail in this, plz ask!
All the best x
Best of luck

If she sleeps happily in a bouncy chair maybe it's a sign that she has had a bit of reflux. Prop your cot up so the mattress is at an angle. You still need to lie her on her back and make sure she's feet to foot.

You said she was grunting? Is this all the time, is there any pulling below her ribs or the base of her neck at the front?

liquidclocks · 30/07/2006 19:19

My cot had a tilt option but you could prop the legs on books/bricks. This means the mattress stays flat which is better because it means baby's tummy doesn't get scrunched up.

I've given up caffineated coffee too..DD2 was very restless after a cafetiere coffee on Tuesday, so on decaff only now. Terrible headache, but no fretful baby !

cookiem · 30/07/2006 22:20

My dd is nearly 10weeks old and she suffered a lot from wind in the first few weeks but never kept her awake thank god, she just used to grunt all night and keep me awake!!

I started taking her to baby massage where they show you how to massage the tummy which helps relive wind and constipation. It took about a week for this to be effective but now she sleeps sound in the night. I normally massage her once a day when she gets out the bath and it's really pleasant for both of us. I also raised her cot slightly so she wasn't lying so flat and this has helped too. Good luck xx

cookiem · 30/07/2006 22:21

ps, also things like beans and broccoli and anything that will give you wind will give her wind - I learnt that one the hard way!!

MummyPig · 30/07/2006 22:56

bodenbetty do you think your dd might have reflux? It can affect them even if they aren't bringing anything up - and it often is worse at night because of lying down, and it may take weeks or months before you notice it.

Feeding her in different positions might help, also keeping her upright for a while after feeding (not actively 'burping', just allowing the milk to go down) and raising the head of her bed by a phone directory or something similar under the feet or under the mattress. Massage might be good but perhaps keep her head raised while you are doing it. Some people have good results from seeing cranial osteopaths but it didn't help my little one.

(My ds2 only showed any real signs of reflux when he was about 2 months old, and he was a 'silent' refluxer, which meant he rarely threw up, but he was obviously in pain a lot of the time. Night-times were hell until we saw a paediatrician and he was put on the right medication.)

here's a basic page about reflux: from the PAGER website

and another useful site by a mum to several reflux babies

but if you think this might be it, then I have plenty more pages you could look at - or just hunt for 'reflux' in the mumsnet archives!

hope that helps, also it might not be reflux but it's worth considering

MummyPig · 30/07/2006 23:08

hi again bodenbetty, I've just looked at a few of your old posts and I think it's quite possible your dd could have reflux, you might want to look through the kellymom.com site and read about 'fussy' babies and overactive letdown, if you haven't already.

I have also remembered that the sling really helped my ds2, it held him close to me and upright too so that his reflux didn't hurt him too much. So you could try that as well

If anything in your diet is causing it, my bet would be on dairy rather than wheat, it's fairly often linked to reflux/colic in breastfed babies as traces of the cow's milk protein can get through to your breastmilk (although far less than she would get if she were on formula, of course). There's a really good yahoo group for mums breastfeeding babies with reflux, here and many of the mums have lots of experience with dietary changes.

bodenbetty · 31/07/2006 10:27

thanks all. her bed is raised already it just means if she does vomit it slides down a bit more!! last night she seemed to settle slightly better (as in it only took an hour not 2) if i fed her 1 boob each feed so might try that agin. want to mention reflux to teh HVtomorrow but she already thinks I'm a barking mad neurotic old bag!
tried colief last night - such a bloody faff though with milton adn teaspoons etc.
if it is reflux wouldn't she have it all day - can it just be a nightime thing?

I FF so can't offer advice on your diet save that you be wary of changing it without being certain that's what's causing the problem - if you didn't eat everything in the lists they give for reflux you'd be on a pretty poor/boring diet.

DS's was worse at night, I assume because all muscles including the one at the top of the tummy get more relaxed during sleep. The odd thing was with DS that being sick at night didn't bother him too much but when he wasn't being sick during the day he seemed to be in a lot of pain.

BTW, all new mum's I know think they're paranoid - goes with the job - but don't let it stop you from pursuing this with your HV, sounds like your DD is quite uncomfortable and if it's reflux that's avoidable.

2 tips - give medicine (grip water, anticolic stuff etc.) using and oral syringe rather than a teaspoon - MUCH easier! (I'm sure your local pharmacist can give you one under the counter)

  • buy a few real nappies (big ones) and put them under DDs head at night to catch the sick - saves loads of faff and washing.
