Wind/colic/reflux - when did it get better for you?

My DD is 6 weeks and suffers with either bad wind or reflux. I'm starting to think it's def trapped wind as she had a good few days and nights over the weekend which was amazing, felt like a new woman!

However last night she had a rough night - hours of crying/screaming and going all rigid.

Has yours suffered with this type of thing and if so when did they start to get better? Am really not keen on prescription meds especially as she's started having some good days, I'd prefer to get by and ride it out of we can.

My ds had all three :(
From atleast 2wks old ds had very bad trapped wind and colic, I would say his colic went at about 8wks, and his trapped wind was around the same time.
His reflux however was not diagnosed by a dr until he was around 10weeks we then battled to get proper meds for it and I would say once he was prescribed ranitidine at 12wks there was a marked improvement and now at nearly 6mths old he is fine :)
I remember it being such a hellish time though and couldn't see any light at the end if the tunnel and everyone kept telling me 'he will grow out of it' which didn't help at the time but they were right!

So tough isn't it! You really want to be enjoying your new baby and don't want people to think you're complaining all the time, but it's so hard and feels unfair that some babies suffer when other don't. It's the worst thing watching them so distressed! How did you tell the difference between wind and reflux? I'm praying it's just wind with mine, and hoping the fact she's had a few good days/nights means it isn't reflux.

It is horrible everyone else seems to have these happy little babies and we're sat up at 2,3,4,5 in the morning with screams of horror :(
The difference with my ds's trapped wind and reflux was with his reflux he would really struggle when u was feeding him, gagging and choking on his milk, arching his back, sweating, and I could smell the acid on his breath :( reflux babies don't like burping either it brings up the acid!
Are you ff or bf?

Alexandra6 · 21/01/2014 13:45

It's so tricky to know if she has reflux too and of course winding positions would make that hurt more Sad I'm bf and she's putting on weight well, she does sometime fuss at the boob, taking her mouth off and back on, when she relaxes into the feed it's better. I hear her gulping in air though. I suppose if she had a severe reflux prob, she wouldn't drift off into a deep sleep after feeds like she often does?

Love her so much but sometimes it feels like it's been 6 months rather than 6 weeks since she was born! It certainly makes me appreciate the days when she's settled and I'm grateful we've had a few of those now.

My DS had horrible wind as a new born. The MW suggested infacol. I tried it and felt guilty about medication but he immediately became a more comfortable baby. still windy but without the horrible screams of pain for 2 hours at a time. Forgot to give it to him for his feeds one afternoon and we were back to hime cpscreaming in pain that night. He's 14 weeks now and I'm phasing it out with no ill effects

DD had silent reflux. It did not improve until we got her meds sorted at Paediatrics when she was 7 months.

It was bearable in the early days but by 5 months all she did was scream. She screamed all day, everyday. It took 40-60 minutes of rocking, etc. to get 10 minutes sleep. She averaged 40 minutes sleep per 12 hours. At this point, she started refusing to feed. This helped us be taken seriously by the NHS.

I think I would've had a breakdown if the meds hadn't worked.

Alexandra6 · 21/01/2014 15:28

lostmysocks maybe I should think about trying infacol. I wonder if it would work if I gave it to her only on the nights when she seems uncomfortable so she wouldn't have to take it on the 'good' days too? Or do you think it's too late for it to work once the wind is trapped, if that makes sense?

stargirl that sounds so hard! What was she like in the early days around 6 weeks? Trying to work out if mine will go that way, really hope not.

Infacol only works by building it up in your baby's system so it's not really a medication that can be used one day and not the next! Infacol turns all the tiny little air bubbles into one big one so in effect should be easier to bring up but when you have a reflux baby it makes it worse the bigger the burp the more acid comes up.
Drs are very sceptical about reflux and silent reflux and seem to think its 'panicky' mums or ftm that don't know what it's like and they could not be more wrong
We was only listened to properly once we were seen by a paediatrician.
I actually took my ds to a cranial osteopath from 4wks old through to 12wks and I swear it made a difference with his wind and colic

stargirl1701 · 21/01/2014 16:55

She was generally unsettled. She did sleep but there was a lot of screaming associated with feeding. She was always the most unsettled baby in any group! We just thought it was colic. We didn't flag anything up to the GP until 3 months.
