How many feeds in 24hrs for a 6 week old FF baby compared to a BF baby?

And how much, and how long between them on average?

I'm just wondering really. I'm breastfeeding my 6 week old ds, who feeds on average 2 hourly, and often more regularly, so I'm feeding him 15-18 times a day for 10-15 minutes at a time, and am exhausted and flagging!

Between 6 and 7 bottles a day. Will go anywhere between 90 minutes and 6.5 hours between but she is a big baby. It's a doddle Wink

I'm breastfeeding my second daughter and at 6 weeks they were both having around 6-7 feeds a day. They were going 3 1/2 hours ish between feeds during the day the 6 hours ish at night.

Are you sure he's hungry rather than tired? Both of my daughters get very 'sucky' when they're tired (although neither of them would take a dummy !) but I didn't feed them if i knew they were likely to need a nap (eg they'd been up an hour or so).

Matilda, that's a possibility, although DS has also has a tongue tie which was just diagnosed last week. The advisor who diagnosed it thinks that it's causing him to transfer milk ineffectively, which is in turn tiring him out and not filling him up so he has to feed more often to make up for it. Unfortunately the waiting list to get it separated is at least 7 weeks, and I'm not entirely sure I can manage that long as we are! We did have a few 3 hour gaps over the last few days, but they seem to have shortened again now,

Poor you, it's exhausting isn't it? As Matilda 101 says, are you sure it's hunger and not tiredness? Could it be a growth spurt? Or has this been the way he always feeds? Does he feed well? Both of my babies were tongue tied and fed lots but not very well, so they got tired easily and had to feed very frequently. Try and get some help from local breastfeeding support if you can. Face to face advice and support is best with BF as there are so many small things that can make a big difference. Well done on getting this far. X PS comparison between BF and bottle fed babies can be misleading as bottle feeding is easier for the baby so they probably do get more with less effort. Having said all that, it does sound like you are feeding alot -probably normal though!

I do feel for you sleep deprivation is crap! I have no experience with tongue ties but a 7 week wait seems hell of a long time if it is causing issues with feeding in such a tiny baby.

I would definately contact a bf councellor or go to a bf support group if you have one nearby (our local surestart have a session) as they may be able to help.

Just wanted to reassure you that things do get better. It may be tongue tie, but I was not in my experience. What I can tell you is that my now 3 month old son used to feed so frequently for weeks. Averaging 15 times a day, wanting feeds every 90 minutes somtimes an hour (although luckily he went for much longer stretches at night), it was exhausting and I felt very overwhelmed by it all. Things have gradually improved these past few weeks, he is now feeding every 3 hours, sometimes less but overall I no longer feel so tied down with a boob monster and have a bit more freedom. I hated bf feeding initially but am starting to enjoy it now, just! So feeding very frequently earlier on may not necessary be cause for concern it may just be what your little one needs and a way of boasting your milk supply.

We FF.

Every 2 or 2.5 hours in day. 3 sometimes 4 at night.

Around 8 bottles in 24 hours.

I love FF :)
