DD was bf for 2 weels mixxed for 1 week and then fully formula fed - she's 9 weeks now. Shw taks a full 8 oz 4 - 5 times a day and at th end of a bottle sometimes wants more. She weighs 11lb 14 now - she sleeps for about 10 hours at night. My HV said she doesn't think we'd get to 6 months before weaning her. I was wondering whether 2nd milk for hungier babies would satisfy her or if it is just a gimmick??

'2nd milk' has more casein in the protein element, which is tougher for an infant tum to digest, and takes longer to do so. '1st milk' has more whey in the protein element(like breastmilk), which means there is less work for the tum to do and so the milk is processed slightly more quickly. Formula milk people have marketed 1st milk as being closer to breastmilk, but it's bollox, really. The whey in it is still cows whey

She's sleeping well, she doesn't feed that often, and she's growing. You could change her milk, but she can have more of the 1st milk if she wants it.

I don't know why your HV is so determined not to support you feeding milk only till 6 mths, which is the current guidance.

Hope this helps

thanks tick tock - i'll leave her as she is - she's never been a particularly sicky baby and seems satisfied for now with her milk
