My son breastfeeds and bottle feeds. I'm finding myself giving bottle more now bc of my fast let down. He hates getting sprayed w milk and is starting to really fuss at breast. So, I'm pumping milk and giving it in bottle more often. However, i find it difficult to get him to drink more then 1 or 2 oz at a time and now he is starting to wake more frequent at night!!

How do I get him to take more??? Also, want him to drink more during day, but find it impossible, as he is just to very interested in food!! He is gaining weight....but I feel like he doesn't like breast, expressed milk or formula much! Why won't he just drink 4 or 5 oz? Argghhh.

Help!

what speed teat are you using?

Hi Mamabear, their tummies are only a little larger than an egg at that age, which is about 3oz - so it could just be that he's full up!

I use a 2 teat from Avnet. Sometimes he can drink from it but sometimes milks comes out. Tried 1 teat again and doesn't change anything. I suspect a 2 teat he lets it spill out when he done his feed. I would really like him to drink more in the day. Bc right now he is waking several times a night to feed! Its really tiring. ESP bc I have an energetic 23 month dsughter!

My almost 18 weeker still only eats 3 ounces, 4 if really lucky.

I don't understand how some babies eat 4 to 6 ounces! Also, he is waking a lot at night. It has been pretty bad the last few nights and today so fussy. I thought once they hit 12 weeks it's supposed to get easier! Instead it feels more difficult!

He could be going through the 12 week growth spurt?

" Why cant he just drink 4 or 5 ounces?" are you serious? my almost one year old whos 24 lbs only drinks 4 ounces!! 4 or 5 ounzes at that age would be over feeding him. who told you he should be drinking that much? if you know a 3 month old drinking 6 ounces then they are being over fed. breastmilk is different than formula, they need more formula because it doesnt change with age. breastmilk changes becomes thicker etc or more nutrition in it for what babys need so they dont need that much. pluss if your breastfeeding and formula feeding too if he drank 5 ounces it would strech his belly which would make it harder for your supply to keep up with him.

i would reccomend to keep nursing he will get used to the fast let down and usualy will settle in no time.

" He is just very intrested in food"- What do you mean? solid food? hes 3 months old.. hes intrested in everything your doing.. he has no clue what food is.

Hun your doing a great job but him drinking more wont make him stop waking up whether for thirst or for comfort. why dont you just breastfeed at night so its easier on you. but people think food is the answer to sleep but they will wake up anway 3 months is very young to expect too much from sleep some babies sleep through and some dont. the natural age they say for sleeping through is 2 years old. some sleep through from birth. some wake up all the time but its not a problem as such its just what there body naturaly needs. whether its for a cuddle or for milk due to thirst or hunger etc. I can understand it is tyring but it does get easier but they go through sleep regressions and fussy times for different reasons and sometimes for no reason at all, your aim isnt to fill his belly some babies like snacking. :) your doing a great job. 2 ounces is more than enough for baby if thats what baby wants.

Also breastfed babies should always stay to newborn teet.
