How early will a baby drink from a straw cup?

DD was a bottle refuser and after trying every bottle / cup took to straws at about 7m.

DS hasn't really tried a bottle much but as he's nearly 5m I thought we'd go straight to cups.

What's the earliest you know of them managing a straw?

Mine never had a bottle tried every bottle and teat on market and could suck a proper straw desperation at 5 months!

I might have to try him with a straw soon then. Would love to be able to leave him for just a little while...

Anyone recommend any straw cups? DD used (and still uses) the munchkin ones, but when she wS a baby they were too hard to suck so I had to use a knife to bust the valve...

Have you tried a doidy cup? No straw but open and easy to see what's being poured due to cup tilt. Both of mine could manage around 6 months when we started using for water

jennimoo · 20/01/2014 07:21

We have those. I haven't tried them for milk but will use them for water again. DD lived the straw cup as was holding it herself very quickly, but took longer to (safely!) hold the doidy!

Ohhh I hadn't thought of a straw cup. Tried all different beakers but my 8 month old is not really interested. She will take a sip or two from a sippy cup but that's it. Thank you all, will keep my fingers crossed it works!

DS is 21 weeks and sucked from the cup today! I bought one from superdrug with no valve and he did pretty well for a first go! Happy to post details if anyone's interested.

The Disney Store straw cups are the only ones that DS can drink out of, but he drinks loads from them with ease. Trouble is that they leak horribly.

All of the leak proof ones have stupid valves. The Mothercare ones are shocking.

FixItUpChappie · 21/01/2014 16:58

My youngest started at 6 months with the straw cup and now at 11 months drinks all his milk that way except his middle-of-the-night bottle.

I wouldn't have even thought of it TBH but when my eldest was around 9 months old we visited a friend who's child had been drinking from a straw for ages. I went to the store post-haste and bought a bunch of the same cup. Its really fantastic, fantastic in the convenience department to establish the straw thing as early as possible Smile.

jennimoo · 21/01/2014 17:03

DD had the munchkin ones but I used a knife to cut the valve so she could actually get something out.

I use Nuby ones but pick them up when they're on offer at Tesco as I think they're expensive

Woodifer · 21/01/2014 18:26

Could you guys link to the cups you're talking about (I googled but there are loads of munchkin ones). Thanks!

Wow thanks jenni!

Smile
jennimoo · 22/01/2014 19:20

I've been lusting after the momma cups. Are they quite easy for them to suck through?

My DD is 19 mo and still won't use a straw! Do any of you have any tips how I could encourage her to? She won't even try with one! xxx

jennimoo · 22/01/2014 19:40

Put ice cream on the sucky end? ;)

Why do you want her to use one? Are you trying to get away from a sippy cup or just because?

Just so that it's another option when we are out. All those kids meals come with a carton of juice, and she won't even try them! It's not often I don't have a cup for her, but it'd be handy if she'd use a straw occasionally xxx

jennimoo · 22/01/2014 19:58

No ideas really I'm afraid but my DD won't drink anything but milk and a little water and she's 3, which can also be a pain sometimes so I understand your wanting her to be more flexible!

I expect it's a strange feeling, mouth suddenly filling with drink, which is probably more familiar to a BFed baby than a toddler!

The momma cups with straw and handles have dropped in price from £5.99 to £3.99 on amazon so I've ordered 2! Let's hope he can manage to suck them as the handles will be great for him to hold himself in no time!
